Default Venezuela Baseball

Two baseball junkies considering travel to Venezuela in November to
see Venezuelan Professional
Baseball League games. If anyone's done this, would appreciate
information/experience.

Is crime/safety in Venezuela such a big issue that this is not a good
idea? Or, are there areas/places
we can go in relative safety?

I believe there are eight teams in the winter league. Are these (how)
close to Caracas?

Not a bad idea. I'm going to Nicaragua for the same reason in January (more
on this below).

MLB teams send players that they have under contract to play there during
the winter. It's unlikely that they would do this if there were safety or
health issues.

I've spent some time talking to Kit Krieger, who runs escorted baseball
tours in Cuba. (Free plug: http://www.cubaballtours.com/ ) When I told him
I was going to Nicaragua, he made some good (but unsuccessful) arguments
for going to Cuba instead. He says that Cuba is a very unique environment
for baseball. For example, imagine that Ebbets Field had never been torn
down. It's only a matter of months before this comes to an end, and they
start charging $6 for hot dogs.
