Default Good Town to Stay in on the Coast?

I am looking for a town to stay in for 3 months from about December to
March. I am thinking either just north of Sydney or just south of the
gold cost. This is what I need:

1. Self contained unit for 1 or 2 persons.
2. On or close to the ocean. I don't want a desert beach but I also
don't want it shoulder to shoulder either.
3. Internet access
4. Close to large supermarkets, restaurants and civilization but not
too close (within 5 km).
5. Safe
6. AUD$2000 or less (preferably) per month for three months.
7. Easy public transportation to Sydney or Brisbane.

Any ideas on a good place? Is Tweed Heads good?

sorry to say, but I do not like your chances, no matter where.
Over Christmas and the school holidays prices are high and your
requirements, whilst not over the top, would restrict your choice. And
whilst $2000 / months sounds a lot $ 66 / day wont buy you what you
expect. Sorry.
But keep trying.

I was googling around (for sydney non-gov't ferry services!) and found a few
sites where people could rent apartments and things. Those kinds of things
would be worth a go, to find what's available and how much it costs. That
said, those areas are mega booked for christmas and then the kids summer
school hols.

I'd recommend you go further south to Ballina (as opposed to
Byron Bay which would be lots more expensive) and if you got
in early and make a booking with deposit you might get a 3
month rental over the "peak period" for a reasonable price.

Check out http://www.davidrclark.com.au/ for holiday rentals
and contact details to explore. I'm not associated with them
in any way except we used them for our own holidays.

Remember though you are looking at peak season, our summer
and school holidays, especially January.

Recommend you look at this travel related website too

it has a lot of good local contributors,

You might like to give this URL a try for a start.

http://www.qld.gov.au/leisure_and_culture/holidays.html

Gold Coast city finishes right on the NSW border.

The coast there is referred to as the "Tweed Coast". Try googling for
"Cabarita" or "Fingal" or "Pottsville" or "Kingscliff".

Further south is "Brunswick Heads" and "Ballina" with "Byron Bay" and
"Lennox Head" in between.

A word about the coast once you get south of Tweed Heads. It fits your
criteria in some areas and not in others, especially no 4. We often go down
that way for the very reason that it is not so crowded.

The Northern Rivers coast of the NSW has some of the best holiday areas in
Oz depending on what you want. In fact anywhere above Port Macquarie right
up to the border.

Have you had a look at the Sunshine Coast? i.e. the coast north of
Brisbane.
