Default Tourist Hotel Prices in Australia?

What are the average tourist hotel prices in Australia? I know there
are a wide range of prices, depending on location and quality. I just
want to know the general price for a clean, decent tourist hotel. The
kind of hotel a tourist would find near a train station or close by.

This website for the Golden Chain motel group is fairly
representative http://www.goldenchain.com.au/home. As an
aside, I use them regularly - reasonable price and a
consistent standard.

In broad terms I budget AU$90-$100 per night for my annual
wanderings. However, using booking sites like
www.wotif.com.au or www.ratestogo.com.au or
www.needitnow.com.au can bring that price down quite a bit
at times.

In general terms it is cheaper in the country towns than
Sydney or Melbourne - but not always. At Christmas Holidays
time (last two weeks of December, all of January) it is
often much more expensive in coastal towns than the major
cities.

As our travelling styles have changed, our motels tend to be
nearer to major through highways than they are to train
stations. In country towns you are generally better off
looking for a motel than a hotel.

Cheers, Alan, Australia
