Hi Von,

Royal Caribbean is considered by the industry to be "popular" or
"mass-market". Celebrity, Holland America, & Princess are considered
"Premium". This is how the industry rates itself. You can hear
cruise executives discuss these designations ad nauseum on the
investor, employee, & agent conference calls. We have had long
threads here on r.t.cruises whether these designations are appropriate
or not. You could do a Google and put yourself to sleep reading
them. g

Best regards,
Ray

What about Royal Caribbean? Do they own Celebrity cruise lines?

Yes Royal Caribbean purchased Celebrity to market as their premium
brand.

How in the world can you get more premium than Royal Caribbean?

By serving good food on a consistant basis!

It is a marketing distinction more than anything else

They do add upscale touches on Celebrity over RCI. For example shower
caps, q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom. All rooms have robes.
The lounge chairs on the main pool deck have covered pads. Cloth towels
in some of the public restrooms. Fewer announcements. In the buffet the
staff will carry your tray to a table. Personal escort to cabin on
embarkation.

I like RCI very much, but I would never consider them "premium."
Seabourn, Silverseas, Radisson, Cunard (is supposed to be) and several
others are considered premium cruise lines.

Per the "books" (Berlitz, Frommers, etc.), Seabourn, Silversea and Radisson
(along with Crystal) are considered in the Luxury category (higher than
premium). Celebrity and HAL are the Premium.

I don't pay much attention to the books or the cruise rags, plus I'm
getting tired of trying to figure out the fine line between
semi-luxury, midstream, premium, bargain basement, mass market,
luxury, etc

Price.

This is the feeling I got on Howie's last cruise on board the Carnival
Conquest. (It WAS the Conquest, wasn't it?? He couldn't say enough positive
about the dining experience on that ship.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Howie! :-)

I consider Princess "mass market". I really didn't see a huge amount of
"premium" when I cruised on them. Seemed pretty basic, in my opinion. Not
complaining, mind you. That's mostly because I don't think I would fit into
"premium". I'm more of a mainstreamin' kinda gal.

And just where does the Oceania Cruise Line fit in this line-up? We have
heard mostly good reports about this new line, and have booked a cruise on
the Oceania Regatta to see for ourselves.
