Now, if it were a British wine bar, I'd want to ask for a "nice claret",
hoping that the server understood..........

50/50 chance probably.

As to beer/ale in England, if they ask "Which brand?", what's wrong with
asking "What would you recommend?"

"Whatever you're having," works.

try "good evening mine host, a pint of your best bitter please".
or perhaps not.

Okay, I'm having a "senior moment" - it's tantalizingly familiar, but

It's not original with me, but may I suggest:
"The usual, please -- bucket of beer and a snorkel."

I thought it was yuppie and Chardonnay that were the synonyms.

Back in my Castlebar drinking days, several punters objected to my
ordering a martini on one occasion, saying that not only was it a
yuppie drink, but that only fags drank them. This is the sort of
attitude I have to contend with in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

I don't know either, some play, comedy? It would have been 50s,
Hancocks Half Hour would be the kind of thing.
