From the country, and from the continent, that is always giving
lessons to the United States — in the struggle for brotherly love, in
the fight against racism, etc etc etc — Caroline Fourest testifies in
Le Monde about the case of a fellow — an agnostic — named Mohamed…

Ethnics are so tedious and tiresome. They are tied to idiotic
politics and religions and customs. Food taboos, stupid
fundemenatalist dress. Half must have been retarded or imbred in
their orginal country and were brought in as cheap labour. To low IQ
to assimilate or function outside of their middle eastern culture.

People just want to escape them and be with people they can relate
to. Occaisionally someone comes along that you can relate to but they
are just a face in the crowed. What an disaster, what an idiotic idea
in the first place.

I was unaware that 'any' country had to like or love us? Sounds like
a Good House Keeping story.

My wife and I have been to the middle east a number of times. Food
taboos, which have been studied, were a reaction to people dying
because of a lack of sanitation. They do not eat meat from cloven-
hoof animals because they (Pigs, goats, etc.) eat other animal parts,
and one can get a prion disease (brain-fever. Mad-cow disease) that
way. Not to mention Trichinosis, a parasite, which felled Yul
Brynner, in the Trader Vic's in Washington, D.C. eating rare pork. It
is all cooked well-done now, but the elders of the middle-east had a
reason for their laws. What they did not have was a government, or a
food and drug administration, so the people had to be told that this
was a law from GOD! That they understood. The local clan chief had
limited rule. Same thing for crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans.
They eat old body parts, so they are not kosher or halal. Fish that
eat other fish are okay. A lot of rules, but a lot of danger. They
did not make that stuff up lightly. Some of them have been made
obsolete by modern food inspection, but they may not have that. We
have eaten fresh fish, beef, vegetables, in small restaurants in
Cairo, Alexandria (the fish place) and never had even an upset
stomach. We knew enough to not ask for a pork sausage.

As an aside I have a recipe book titled, "Monet's Table" which
consists of the recipes that Claude Monet served in his house. He
developed some of them (but had a cook to do the actual cooking) and
since they had no refrigeration (and he would not even allow an ice-
box) everything had to be fresh. The chicken would be slaughtered on
the day, and cooked with fresh vegetables from his own garden. Later,
refrigeration changed the way the western world would eat, and the
eastern world lags in that. But there is usually a reason why people
do what they do. They may not know the actual reason, having been
told that it is *GOD'S LAW* - do it or else. But there is probably a
good reason for the old law.

That 'may' have been the initial reason for abstenance from certain

rigorously enforced the food taboo the more extreme the religion and
the more conflict riddent a society.

Food taboos prevent assimilation: their true purpose.

Now that is baloney, the prion diseases are well known is sheep and in
fact are associated with feeding rendered down animal meat proteins to
herbiverous animals. Not eating pigs.

Fundemanetally a silly mean old ethnic fool decided that his opinion
and fantasty was important and wanted to make sure that members of his
muslim group didn't assimilate into the pagans, coptic/sysric-
christains,Yazidi or Mandaeists and over empahsised food precautions
in order to create revulsion and seperation with the other community.

Same thing for crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans.

But shrimp that eat planton are not OK?

The food taboos are in fact based on fantasy, poor cooking, poor
hygene or just plain fantasy eg the rejection of leatherjackets
(scalless fish). Europe has no health problem with the pig. It never
did have. Pigs are actually extremely clean by nature but they must
be fed properly and their environment kept clean.

Now of course that the real reasons for a possible caution in avoiding
pigs is know the religious rulers of the middle eat persist in their
wrong beliefs and persist in a fantatic enforcement of anti pork, anti
hallal laws.

We also have the wipe your ass with the left hand and wash it
requirement that spreads cholera through fecal contaminated finger
nails: yet these people look down on Europeans and their toilet paper
(or moss as was used in medieval times)

There are two reasons for the old law. Hygene is the excuse;
segregating and dividing people is the real reason; so that the
religious dictator can have his importance.

You know about 'prions' then you must underatnad 'memes'. The food
taboo is one

I do not disagree that food taboos have been used for cultural
separation. What I have said is that they (probably - I do not know)
did not start out that way, but had a useful purpose at one time. The
ancient cultures, in the middle east, were physically separated by
geography so (probably) did not know, or care, what others were
doing. Their leaders were religious leaders (the idea of a nation-
state came later) and so the people were told the laws came from God.

Anyway, the sheep with prion disease came after animal protein was
introduced into their diet. Normally, being a herbivore, they would
only eat grass. The ancients could also have safely eaten a
Brontosaurus - if they could find one.

And I knew that Yul died from cancer. I was in Washington, D.C. when
he sued Trader Vic's and won a large sum of money, for Trichinosis.
He was in the hospital, and the case was well-covered because of the
rarity of Trichinosis (they had a time even determining what he had)
and that it was commercially-raised pork, supposed to be free of that
disease.

Anyway, I think that it is true that cultures use food restrictions to
separate peoples, but it didn't start out that way. Even today, when
I am in Israel or Egypt, I follow the food customs of the place only
because they probably are serving the safest food. If they are not
putting raw eggs in their beer, then I am not going to ask for that.

We hosted an Egyptian general and a minister of defense at our house.
I had the required orange juice and other non-alcoholic drinks, which
they drank at the meeting, but now he asked for scotch. Scotch on the
rocks? Scotch and soda? No, just scotch, and he held my hand so the
glass was full to the brim. Situational ethics. I have know Israelis
to not even ask about whether the food is kosher, they just eat what
is there. It only seems to be an issue if one wants to make it one.
