Authenticity apart, I have to say I've often eaten Indonesian in the Netherlands at approximately UK curry prices - maybe not in central A'dam recently, but then I don't tend to eat curry in Regent Street either.

There's no restaurants in the Leiden area selling Asian food for the price of a

good curry in the North of England. You are lucky if you can buy a starter in NL

for the same price.

How much are you paying for the Indonesian meals you buy in NL?

Martin in Zuid Holland

Last occasion was about 18 months ago in De Lier, near den Haag.
It was a perfectly ordinary (but reasonably smart) 'pseudo' Indonesian when I hosted some 20 people for a very fulfilling 'banquet' (not a rijstafel).
It came to around 16 euro per head (the drinks bill was the same again!).
A curry with side dishes would be at least that, probably more, in our Surrey village.

Much nearer to Delft :-)

This one https://www.eet.nu/de-lier/china-garden ?

16 Euro/head is very cheap by Dutch standards. A main course costs more in most

places. A main course in what is supposed to be the best Indian restaurant in

the area in North Staffordshire, where my daughter lives is well under £10, OTOH

houses cost a fraction in N Staffordshire of the price of houses in Surrey. A

good three bed roomed semi-detached house costs under £150K

Makes one wonder why there isn't a mass migration to leafy N Staffordshire :-)

Martin in Zuid Holland

You're telling me.
I've just moved (within the same town) to a small 3-bedroom detached bungalow for £400,000.
You tell me why I don't move to Staffs - or, more especially, Spain! :-))

Zuid Holland isn't any cheaper than that.

For some reason I thought you lived in Harwich.

Martin in Zuid Holland

Nah - deepest Surrey. Apparently the most expensive for property in the UK except for central London. :-(

I guess Surreyman was a clue :-)

The bungalow is cheap by Zuid Holland standards. There's a property boom here

prices have reached 2003 level. Some years ago the Dutch government killed the

housing market by making mortgage payments not tax deductible.

Martin in Zuid Holland

I can scarcely believe that. It's some time since I looked at house prices (around De Lier & Naaldwijk, for instance) but they were then very cheap re Surrey. But most people (I know, anyway) seem to rent, and the current rental prices also still appear cheap.
Interesting.
Mortgage tax relief disappeared in UK a million years ago!

Just realised I don't know where you are, either (& I don't mean Zuid Holland!)?
Are you Brit or Dutchish?

A Brit expat living near Leiden.

Nice. Used to visit the excellent university there.
On the surface at least (?) an extremely attractive town.
I used a flat in den Haag for my visits (moving throughout Netherlands, bookshops, publishers, universities), made numerous friends with whom we still visit, and in the 60s my wife and I also darned nearly 'emigrated' there.

Guys you should take care of this If you want to quote someone then don't quote more than one post it make your reply long and difficult to read. I hope it will be helpful for all.

They retired long ago. What were Indonesian restaurants are owned and run by
Chinese immigrants nowadays.

I've also had very dodgy food in an Italian restaurant run by Pakistanis
or Indians.
