A passenger jet carrying 135 people crashed as it attempted to land
at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport this morning.

The Turkish Airlines Flight 737 broke into three pieces as it hit the
ground next to the runway, narrowly missing a main road and some
houses.

One person is thought to have died, while 20 are injured. As many as
50 people miraculously escaped the crash, CNBC Turkey reported.

Witnesses reported seeing passengers struggling through luggage strewn
around the plane to get to safety.

'Some passengers are dead, some are injured and some are alive,' a
spokesman from Schiphol airport's press office said.

Still images shown on Dutch television showed the plane on the ground,
with the tail section of the fuselage broken off, and a wide crack in
the fuselage just behind cockpit.

The jet did not appear to be on fire.

Officials at Istanbul's Ataturk airport said the plane had departed
earlier from Istanbul.
Turkish Airlines was not immediately available for comment.

The plane was said to be a Boeing 737 jet.

Schiphol is the fifth-largest passenger airport in Europe. All flights
in and out of the airport are currently suspended.
