Default Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, Calgary - Help Please :-)

HI all,

I'm planning the Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, Calgary trip.

Here's my itinerary:

Couple days in Vancouver

Day 1: Vancouver - Clearwater
Day 2: Clearwater - Jasper
Day 3: Jasper
Day 4: Icefield Parkway
Day 5: Banff
Day 6: Banff - Calgary

What do you guys think?

Any suggestions on where to stay on the Icefield Parkway - any good
(affordable) places along highway 11?

Thanks!

My wife Faye and I drove the Icefield Parkway three years ago, it was
an unforgettable experience. Bring a digital camera with lots of
spare batteries and memory cards, or a film camera and tons of film.
You'll have a good trip. If you stop a few times to enjoy the
scenery, you'll need a full day. You should really try and make it
two long days at least. Bring Binoculars too. Check out our travel
pics www.octopus-diver.com and Faye's paintings at www.fayedietrich.com.

Any advice on whether it's more scenic to drive the Icefields Parkway
from Lake Loiuse to Jasper, or to do it from the other directon istead?

HI all,

I'm planning the Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, Calgary trip.

Here's my itinerary:

Couple days in Vancouver

Day 1: Vancouver - Clearwater

Between Hope and Kamloops take the TransCanada Highway (1)
rather than the quicker Coquihalla Highway (5). The scenery along the
Fraser River canyon shouldnt be missed just to drive 20 km / hr faster
Day 2: Clearwater - Jasper

Take the time when in Clearwater to visit Wells Gray Park, the scenery is
fantastic
especially Helmcken falls

Day 3: Jasper
Day 4: Icefield Parkway
Day 5: Banff
Day 6: Banff - Calgary

What do you guys think?

Any suggestions on where to stay on the Icefield Parkway - any good
(affordable) places along highway 11?

Jasper to Banff is an easy days drive and what lodging there is costs
big time. Banff is pretty pricey too and a little too commercial for
my money. As an alternative there are some nice B&B's and Lodges
in Field BC close to Lake Louise and that way you can take in
Yoho NP as well. The Takakkaw falls alone are worth that side trip

I don't think it matters much -- this is not one of those roads where
you've got a sharp drop-off on one side all the time and therefore want
to be on that side. Of course, if it's a sunny day, going northward
will put the sun behind for you more of the day, which might light up
the scenery better.

I am no expert, but have been out to BC a half dozen times. I don't think
that any particular route is significantly more scenic than another. I
always find the whole place incredibly scenic. It didn't seem to matter
where I was. There was never more than a few miles through the mountains
that an new and incredible new vista appeared.

I don't recall seeing a lot of places to stay between Jasper and Lake
Louise on the Icefield parkway. Your trip sounds a bit onn the quick
side but it is definitely a lovely region and I am sure you will love
it. I did a series of two shows on the area.

Not much along the Icefields, and both Banff and Jasper tend to be
expensive. Booking well ahead by online reservations can save you a
lot. Also consider Canmore, just outside the eastern boundary of the
Park.
