Default Ryanair imposes a 50p charge to cover for wheelchair costs

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3320899.stm

To sum up the story; a disabled man sued Ryanair, because
Ryanair didn't want to foot the bill from handling his
wheelchair, and wanted the man to pay for it. He won,
and now Ryanair announed they will charge 50p for each
passenger to cover the handling of wheelchairs. This
applies to four UK airports.

I kind of have mixed feelings about this... Yeah, you
get what you pay for, and with Ryanair, you really don't
get much, but don't pay much anyway. On the other hand,
maybe Ryanair should've just kept its mouth shut, and
raise the ticket prices 50p... Or maybe this tactic will
keep the actual price of theticket down, but add more
to various charges, which just seems to make it more difficult
to figure out the actual cost of the ticket. And Ryanair
is good in that.

Anyway, in the BBC TV news it was claimed that Ryanair
made profit last year, but elsewhere I've heard that
Ryanair is losing a lot of money. Which is it?

Ryannair claims that the wheelchair should be provided/paid for by the
airport, not the airline.

Still profitable, but predicts downward pressure on profits.

That's no longer a viable position, as the court has just ruled against
them on this point.

Supposedly they are appealing the case but it sure makes them look
bad.

Which is why they are publically raising their prices to cover the
cost to attempt to get their customers debating it presumably.

I have to say it does seem to me to be the airports responsibility,
they are the ones who aren't providing an accessible service unless a
wheelchair is provided.

Jim.
