Default film through x-ray

I usually take 400 speed camera film with me.
When going through walk-through scanning I request that my film be
‘hand-checked’. Usually they give me a hard time, saying that only high
speed (like 1000) needs to be hand checked. I’d rather not hassle, but I
have been insisting, and grudgingly, they open each roll, or now ue the
cloth on each roll, and I do take lots.

What are your experiences with letting 400 speed film stay on the belt?

I ran my own tests once. Once through the machine made no
difference. 8 times through the machine was enough to begin to detect
some very faint fogging, for 400 film.

Realistically, your film will be going through the x-ray at least
twice, and probably more. Stick to your guns on the hand search,
wherever possible.

A completely different story is the explosives scanning equipment used
for checked baggage. Once through those machines is enough to ruin
film. Don't check your film, carry it with you.

My mom always has her film hand checked but I have rarely bothered.

If you use your film up in a timely manner (i.e. before the expiry
date) it should not make any difference. I use the oldest film first.
I also mail it to the processor as soon as I get to the states, so it
doesn't have to go through security on the way home, only on the way
TO vacation.

I've ALWAYS left my 400 speed film go through the security screening.
My brother knows quite a bit about cameras and says that it's perfectly
safe. I've never had a problem with any of my photos. Last cruise (in
May) I took 17 rolls of film and not one little problem! Have a great
cruise!!

I always pack a couple rolls of 1600 film when I go on vacation. That
accomplishes two things, first is that usually the folks at the scanning
will hand review the film, and the second is that I have fast film for some
indoor shots I might not otherwise get.

I've never had a problem with 400, even one roll that went thru 5 or six
times. But I will also say I have taken to buying film when I get to a
destination now.

Sylvia, I always leave my 400 speed film in my carryon and the scanning has
never harmed it ..Just never leave it in your checked luggage.
