Default Overweight Passengers Costing Airlines Millions in Extra Fuel Costs

On this morning's KTLA Morning News, Eric Spillman reports from SNA
that Americans have gained, on avergae, 10 pounds since 1990, and all
that extra weight is costing the airlines TONS of money in extra fuel
costs.

How long before they start charging passengers for airfares by the
pound, just like UPS does for packages?

You say that in jest, but I think they should. Fatties consume more
resources and make things more difficult for the rest of us. Make them pay
for their sloth. That's fair.

Just like those metal cages or templates they use to screen carry-on
baggage by size, they should screen passengers by size and, if they're
too big to fit into one seat, they either pay for two or they don't
fly.

So fly on Southwest and Independence Air. That's their policy, with
the minor tweak that the Passenger of Size (their term) gets the price
of the second ticket back if the plane left with empty seats.
