American Family Cruise Lines went defunct a Decade ago!

American Family Cruises, a joint enterprise of Costa Cruises and Mr.
Nierenberg, had the most ambitious commitment to the family market. The
line's CostaRiviera is being converted in Italy to the American
Adventure, which will make weeklong cruises out of Miami, starting Dec.
18. It will be joined next year by the American Pioneer, which will
sail out of Tampa in the winter and Vancouver in the summer.

Our first cruise in 1993 was on board American Family Cruise's American
Adventure. We had 6 people-my husband and myself and 4 children in their
"family cabin". It was quite an experience, but got us hooked on cruising
and we have not stopped since. Will be on Freedom of the Seas in June with
family and friends to celebrate our 25th anniversary and 18th cruise!!

American Family Cruises failed many years ago and will never live again.

This was not a joint venture. All the money and the ship were provided
by Costa Cruise Lines, who lost a fortune on
converting the Costa Riviera to the American Family product and then
back to the Costa Riviera again.

Costa didn't think that American Family would work and only donated one
old ship to this project. After they saw how much money American Family
lost on one ship they decided to cut their loses before converting the
Eugenio Costa to American Family.

The purpose of trying the American Family project was to try to utilize
their old ships under a different banner as their first new ships in
over 20 years were coming out of the yard, and they wanted to have a
clear image of the Costa brand with all new vessels.
