PEI or Nova Scotia next summer?
Hi group - my family is interwested in a Canadian vacation this year.
My son is 5 and my daughter is 1 year old. We have been looking at "cottage" type rental near Pagy's Cove, a couple on Cape Breton Island, as well as on PEI. Does anyone have any recommendations ? or preferences between the provinces ? It would be *nice* to have a place on the ocean, but still be able to walk to town. Last year on holiday to Southern England we stayed in an apartment right on the ocean in a small village so we were'nt so isolated fromt eh bakery, butcher, etc, etc. The idea is to fly into eigther Halifax or into PEI - then rent a car from there to do daily excursiosns. any advice would be appreciated! The places we are looking at so far : http://www.lordsseasidecottages.com/ (maybe too close tothe bridge ?) http://www.macleods.com/beachvillage.html |

Peggy's Cove is lovely, but packed with tourists such that you can't move.
We love Cape Breton, especially Baddeck (on an arm of the Bras d'Or Lakes); however, with small children, I'd opt for PEI (which is fantastic). Stay on the Gulf side (rather than the Northumberland Strait side), where you can get a cabin on or near the water in or around the National Park, and be near Cavendish where there are a number of kid entertainment things to do --- especially the Anne-of-Green-Gables site. Nearby, in North Rustico, there's a Lobsterman's Diner where they serve great lobster dinners (including PEI mussels) at very reasonable prices. The island is small enough so you can do easy day rides to the lighthouses at each end of the island. The whole place is pretty, friendly and easy to enjoy. wrote in message oups.com... Peggy's Cove is for viewing - not for staying in a cottage with
children. Where you stay depends a lot on how much you are prepared to spend. A lot of people like the New Brunswick east shore, PEI and the "inland sea" of Cape Breton - but don't pass up the opportunity to spend some time in Newfoundland: probably the cheapest and best holiday you will ever have. I'd suggest you look at a Nova Scotia newsgroup like ns.forsale and post a query there. |

I have to agree with the above, and the other advice you have received. Peggy's Cove is not, IMHO, a good choice with small kids. It really is packed with tourists. If you do want to stay in NS, though, there are many better spots further south. (Mahone Bay area, for instance) Likely further north as well, but my main experience in that area is limited to Cape Breton (The Brador Lakes area is very beautiful, in good weather, for instance) and south of Halifax. Lots of good choices, but I don't think Peggy's Cove is one of them, for your purposes. Well worth a day trip if in range, though. Can't beat PEI for a family vacation, overall. If you do want to stay in NS, though, .... You might consider Cheticamp. If you want to use the beaches, you want to be on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And I love the Cape Breton Highlands; plus Cheticamp has some fun cultural stuff. |

For a family vacation, take PEI. The pace is slower, the beaches gentler. |

M.D. Rawson:
Peggy's Cove is lovely, but packed with tourists such that you can't move. And *tiny*. Only about 50 people actually live there, although the daytime population must be quite a bit higher. -- Mark Brader "It flies like a truck." Toronto "Good. What is a truck?" -- BUCKAROO BANZAI |

I also agree that Newfoundland is a great place to see --- spectacular,
especially the west coast at Gros Morne and up the Great Northern peninsula to L'Anse aux Meadows (Viking settlement). But with a 5-yr old? Probably not much to held his attention although icebergs are always impressive, and whale-watching tours (where you actually see some whales!!!) in the Witless Bay/Bay Bulls area on Avalon are great. Overall, though, I think Nfld is more of an adult-visit kind of place.
