Default Easyjet to fly from London Southend Airport

LHR is on the Tube (subway system) which makes it easy and cheap to get

Easy, but only cheap-ish by London standards, which are not those of most
of the world.

But that's a given. If someone baulks at the cost of taking the tube
from Heathrow to central London, they may want to consider their plans.

None of the other London airports are. IMO, that is the key
variable in an airport - if it is connected to the city's subway system.
Both of Chicago's airports are, which is a big plus for Chicago. None
of New York's are (in each case, you have to jump through hoops to get
there by public transit).

Not much of a hoop at JFK. One change from the subway to Airtrain JFK.
London Stansted airport is accessible by train from Liverpool Street
Tube station, no worse than changing tube trains. Pretty much the same
for LGW from Victoria station.

Stansted is pretty expensive to get to and there are no trains to get
you there for early morning flights.

But the bus goes there, e.g. Terravision.

The two cheapest airports to get to from a major city centre that
I know of are Istanbul and Edinburgh. Istanbul has a more
convenient and comfortable service with the metro, but it doesn't
run 24 hours and you can get stuck with using taxis. Edinburgh's
has a night bus service.

I don't know the cost of Istanbul's metro, I expect it's cheap. There
are lots of European airports I can think of with cheap connections to
the airport though- even in the US, Boston's subway connects you for
$1.70.

Manchester has buses and trains (which run all night) and in a couple of
years also trams, though that will probably take longer from the centre
than the trains, but the trains aren't particularly cheap, around £8
return. I can think of other UK cities (e.g. Newcastle) with cheap
services to their airports.

For sheer gratuitous muddle and user-hostility, the public transport
links from Budapest to the two Ferihegy airports (miles apart) would
be hard to beat.

We just took a taxi, which split between two wasn't a hardship.

San Diego Airport is in the City Centre. Las Vegas Airport is near the
Strip. Newcastle (UK) Airport is at the end of one of the Tyneside Metro
lines and I have unlimited Metro travel for £25 per year.

In a month I'll fly to Gibraltar which I hear is also pretty close.
Leaving immediately though.

change to DLR and what seems to be a short walk from the DLR/City Airport
station (I've been through it on the DLR but didn't pay much attention).

Luton (and Gatwick) have direct trains from any of Kings Cross/St
Pancras, Farringdon, or London Bridge stations (and for Gatwick these
trains are cheaper than the ones from Victoria).

They are cheaper than the "non stop" trains from Victoria.

They are (approximately) the same price as the stopping trains from Victoria

I don't believe that's available to a "normal" person.

As for Southend the airport owner has paid to have the station moved to
make it much more convenient and there are trains every 20 minutes to
Liverpool St taking almost exactly an hour which is a bit better than
Stansted (every 15 minutes/50 minutes) but not an enormous amount.

Don't you mean a bit worse...

Anyway it is intended for the Southend catchment area.

All this airport location stuff reminds me:

Stansted 31
Southend 35

Can we have that in pounds?

Stansted is ludicrously expensive to get to from London. Southend
can't be worse, can it?

Well, the only time I did it was almost forty years ago and the train
went through some pretty, er, dodgy parts of East London. A lot of
those are now not at all dodgy, but I think you would still be well
advised to hire bodyguards for the journey. That would put the price
up...

F*UD

Rubbish.
So you'd advise that also for trains into the 2012 Olympics?

So how was Westland?

Terrific.
Just hit the new groene haaring season of course, which was
tremendous!
Didn't realise how small is Maasdijk - my friends' extended families
seem to own most of it! :-))
Great to be back after some 20+ years.
Bad news - my old flat in Leyweg, Haag, used to look out over Westland
polder - now there's a further few miles of city!
But, as always, Dutch hospitality reigned supreme!

Alan

and you had lots of real Indonesian food?

But is the Luton train station in the airport or is some sort of station-
airport shuttle used? At Gatwick the station is under one of the
terminals.

I was aware of the other connections to Gatwick, but the fast train,
Gatwick Express, is from Victoria Station, although we always save a few
pounds and use a non-express train; these are only a a bit slower.

New York calls itself "The City That Never Sleeps" and you can access JFK
24/7 by the subway/AirTrain route. But as to LaGuardia, fuggedaboudit.

My understanding is that everything in Gibralter is pretty close.

Am I right in understanding that they have to close a road when a plane
lands, rather like a railway crossing?

Ah. Yes. The crossing shows up quite clearly in Google maps.
