.........London Southend..........that is!!!! Who makes this stuff
up? It's Southend Airport....for gawds sake! [though ties in nicely
with another thread about how cheap Ryanair are.....well, if you
were coming into London and land at Southend, its gotta be cheap
because the onward time and money will knock a bit of a hole in
Ryanair ticket price and convenience..]

Is it much harder to get to (from Euston, say) than Gatwick or
Heathrow?

LHR is on the Tube (subway system) which makes it easy and cheap to
get to. None of the other London airports are. IMO, that is the key
variable in an airport - if it is connected to the city's subway
system.
Both of Chicago's airports are, which is a big plus for Chicago.
None
of New York's are (in each case, you have to jump through hoops to get
there by public transit).

Not much of a hoop at JFK. One change from the subway to Airtrain JFK.

London Stansted airport is accessible by train from Liverpool Street
Tube station, no worse than changing tube trains. Pretty much the same
for LGW from Victoria station. Luton looks to be a bit hoopy (I've never
been there) but London City doesn't look all that difficult save for the
change to DLR and what seems to be a short walk from the DLR/City
Airport station (I've been through it on the DLR but didn't pay much
attention).

Luton (and Gatwick) have direct trains from any of Kings Cross/St
Pancras, Farringdon, or London Bridge stations (and for Gatwick these
trains are cheaper than the ones from Victoria).

But is the Luton train station in the airport or is some sort of station-
airport shuttle used? At Gatwick the station is under one of the
terminals.

It's close to the airport, and there's a dedicated bus service. In
reality, not a terrible situation. Compare to Gatwick North for example,
which requires another shuttle train. Manchester's train station is in
the middle of the three terminals, but even with the moving walkways it
can seem quite far from checkin...

It can be a nightmare, especially if the escalators aren't working,

And yes, it's a hell of a walk from all the check-ins...

I've also got a feeling that some of the walkways are simply not
switched on overnight...

It was on topic, and you had nothing to add. Why not respond to some two
month old posts? You do enjoy that.

But that train is for access to the other terminal, right? Would be there
even if the train station did not exist.

Kind of like when the only Tube station at Heathrow was in T2/T3 and you
had to take an airside coach shuttle to get to T4 if you had to change
terminals.

Sure, I was making the point (not clearly) that having the train station
directly under the airport didn't necessarily make getting to checkin
much easier.

Stansted is pretty expensive to get to and there are no trains to get
you there for early morning flights.

The two cheapest airports to get to from a major city centre that I
know of are Istanbul and Edinburgh. *Istanbul has a more convenient
and comfortable service with the metro, but it doesn't run 24 hours
and you can get stuck with using taxis. *Edinburgh's has a night bus
service.

San Diego Airport is in the City Centre. Las Vegas Airport is near the
Strip. Newcastle (UK) Airport is at the end of one of the Tyneside
Metro lines and I have unlimited Metro travel for £25 per year.

In a month I'll fly to Gibraltar which I hear is also pretty close.
Leaving immediately though.

My understanding is that everything in Gibralter is pretty close.

Am I right in understanding that they have to close a road when a plane
lands, rather like a railway crossing?

Ah. Yes. The crossing shows up quite clearly in Google maps.

Yep, pedestrians & traffic stop temporarily. But flights are
relatively few.
