Advice
We have two weeks in early October set aside for travel. We want to go to
Argentina and possibly Chile. Suggestions for itinerary, tours, dos/donts, etc. We like just about everything from museums to hiking in the clouds! Thanks, Gene -- Gene Brabston, DMD, MAGD 506 North Section Street Fairhope, AL 36532 251-928-1645 voice 251-990-5774 fax |

Thanks, Gene -- Gene Brabston, DMD, MAGD 506 North Section Street Fairhope, AL 36532 251-928-1645 voice 251-990-5774 fax We researched such a trip a few years back, then never went. There were all sorts of tours available, most at the time originating in Chile. I expect that was because of the economy in Argentina at the time. Chile will offer the best coastal recreation, and Argentina has great sweeps inland, with terrain that resembles some of the US west like Montana. Start with the national tourism sites, and you'll learn much of what might interest you there. They will have endless links to tourism sites and tour specialists. Getting there will be half the fun, and probably half the cost. Most consolidators will have good prices to the capitals, but nowhere else. LAN Chile offers multi-link internal flights for a fixed rate, not sure about Aerolineas. If you should decide to stay in just Chile, do visit the Atacama, north of Santiago and the driest place on the planet. Average annual rainfall=none, but a substantial population thrives there. Now that I think of it, find a usenet archive. In the recent past a fellow posted here about his latest trip, with a link to his own trip website. He was trekking with an outfit, and it all looked wonderful. Keith |

If you like hiking in the clouds, you've chosen THE right place. The best place on Earth. Patagonia. It's now easy to get there by air either from Santiago or Buenos Aires, and modestly easy to get between the two countries by land. Paine park in Chile and the whole El Calafate/El Chaltan area (Fitzroy/Cerro Torre) in Argentine are (literally) incomparable (except to each other.) I went with a company called Mountain Travel. This was top end, and overly expensive. A bit too short, however ... 12 days when 15 or 16 would have been ideal. But very very nice. It was called "Hiker's Patagonia". Go to their web site mtsobek.com and look it up. You can do teh same trip on your own, of course, for far far less money. El Calafate, the gateway city to Patagonia in Argentina is a phenomenon. Five or six years ago it was a sleepy 3000 people, now it is virtually a Jackson Hole or Aspen South, at about 25000 people and upscale everything everywhere. El Chaltan is the much smaller gateway to the Los Claciers park, where Fitzroy and Cerro Torre are. Early October may be, however, too early for this area. The art museums in both capitol cities are excellent. I'm sending you an e-mail giving a pointer to my photos. Doug McDonald |

Advice
Hi Gene,
early October is not the best time of the year to travel to the south in those countries. So, I would suggest you to go north. You could plan to go to the Iguazu falls then travel to the North-West of Argentina, Cachi, Quilmes, Salta, JuyJuy, Humahuaca, etc. From there you could cross over to the north of Chile, Atacama and Altiplano and fly back from Santiago from Arica.
