Default Winter in Las Vegas

Those of you who cruise out of the Port of Las Vegas (Henderson arm)
might be interested to know that we have around 4" of snow in the yard
at the moment, with more predicted by morning. Flights destined to land
in LV were canceled this afternoon due to low visibility, including
flights departing LV. We were in TX visiting the kids and made it into
the air from Phoenix just in time to avoid the landing hold, so we got
home only about an hour later than expected.

With our roads being so sloped, the wet snow is ice-like and it's a good
time to stay home and let it melt off. OTOH, the snow on our palms is
both unusual and quite attractive.

I think I might have lost a tree... I just went out front, and the tree was
extremely snow laden. Once I was able to get around to the street side, it
looks like that whole side is down.

I really wish someone had told me, before it got that bad.

Hi Nonny

You just HAD to boast about your snow, didn't you?

We had about 2 feet of the white stuff on the weekend (more than we usually
get all year). We got out on Tuesday for groceries, etc, then it started
again last night and we have about 4" of fresh slippery stuff now. Most of
the roads have been closed to traffic for most of the evening.

i hope it stops before christmas so we can get out to Barb's cousin's place
for turkey dinner next week.

Down there, you just have to wait about an hour and it will be all gone.
:-)

We're glad you two got home, safe and sound!!

Thanks, Tobie. Our flight had a stopover in Phoenix, and if we'd been
delayed even a few minutes more, we'd probably still be there. We got
about 6" here at the Nonnyhouse, but some other areas go 8" or more. As
you know, Las Vegas' famous "Strip" is in a valley surrounded by
mountains, and the snowfall and temperatures are a function of the
elevation, typically. In this case, it was the biggest snowfall in 30+
years, they newspaper reports, and they had about 5" or more even in the
valley floor- the Strip.

Outside of the fenderbenders you'd expect, the only casualties of note
were broken trees. Most palms did OK, since they could sag and shed the
snow. The deciduous trees did well, also, since they had little to
catch the snow. Trees like Mesquite, Peppers etc. were hardest hit,
having leaves and woody branches. My next door neighbor's Peruvian
Pepper is trashed, with the whole top knocked out. My pepper out front
is sagged, but I think it'll pick back and survive. If not, it's time
to oil up Mr. Chainsaw. grin

We're sure looking forward to seeing everybody in a little over a month.

My family flew to Las Vegas on Christmas morning, about 14-15 years ago,
and they had 2-3 inches of snow on the ground. The city almost came to a
screeching halt. lol

We stayed in the Luxor, which had just been built, and the windows on
the bottom three floors of the hotel were leaking, because the snow had
accumulated on the glass and the snow was melting. It was an
interesting Christmas. My youngest son called yesterday, to remind me
about how it snowed in Vegas.

Woodbury on the St. Paul side.

Just got an e-mail from Karen. She put up her Christmas decorations in
November. She has those little pine trees along the walk. They are on a
timer, every night after five there is a glow underneath 3 feet of
snow. I spoke with a customer service rep in Oregon. She told me they
have 9 ft of snow. If I had a choice between Oregon, Minnesota and Las
Vegas you know where I'd like to be...on a cruise ships in Las Vegas!
(It could happen!)

Well there used to be the Showboat. Actually back in the heyday of
the themed casino, I am sorta surprised there wasn't one.

Knowing Las Vegas, anything could happen.g I would love to see photos
of Karen's glowing snow. lol

Today, it is in the 70's in our corner of Louisiana. Maybe we should
have dinner on the patio while we watch the golfers. Santa will be
wearing shorts and a tank top, when he comes down our chimney. lol

As long as it's not an Elvis impersonator rhinestone encrusted gold lame
leisure suit. No, wait that would be Santa in Las Vegas!
