It will have the side effect of slightly increasing the cost of flying
for everyone, but will have the main effect of making airline seats
more comfortable for the obese and for those who would lose seat space
by sitting next to the obese.

So I think it's a good decision.

Then they should allow smoking on the planes, too. Afterall the only
two reasons they stopped that was because it was infringing on others
and because of the public health hazards (obesity is coming real close
to smoking as a cause of death and costs of the associate illnesses).

Do skinny people have to share a seat to make up for it?

As Mr. Spock would say, "illogical".

Allowing smoking would increase the risk to others on the plane.
Giving more seat room does not.

But the main reason to stop smoking is because of the damage to the
person doing the smoking. It is the cost of THEIR health care that was
the main driver and remains that. The second hand smoke is just an added
reason.

You yourself suggested it would probably add to the cost of flying
if they have to GIVE a second seat to a fat person. That is an impact on
me, more dear, to my mind anyway, than a couple puffs of smoke.

I have no objection to allowing two seats for the obese, as long as they pay
for them. Almost all obese persons are such through gluttony. Set aside
some grocery money for the plane ticket. If some few are large by way of
something other than calories, perhaps that medical condition can be
accommodated by the airlines. I guess I'm not in a sympathetic mood.

This law also helps the handicapped, so their care giver can fly free.
