Asked the transportation captain on the dock for a tour guide, rented

Wow. That's a lot of money. For under $25 per person, you can pick up
a 3-day bus pass, and pretty much get anywhere you want on the island.
Brought along a few guides (Fodors-type books), picked up some
brochures and maps at the pier, and we were self-guided.

Sure I usually do that, but we were four people, ranging from 4 years
old to 55. First visit, not long to see things. A ship's three hour
tour to just a couple of places was about $70 a person. For the same
price (including the generous tip we gave), we had a personalized van
tour for seven hours, where we could stop when / where we wanted.

For example, we stopped at a beach we liked for an hour and had
lunch / swim. I also asked to see a lot of hotels I'd seen on the
web, so we saw them all... plus many of the driver's favorite
locations. I swear, we saw every back alley or side street or nice
house / lawn / park on the island... with a narration the whole time
if we wished.

Extremely worth it to me as a first-time visitor, to get the lay of
the land and know where to come back to the next time. As someone
who for decades did my own thing, I'm now sold on the concept of
hiring local talent the first time around.

Cheers, Kev

The money is well worth it for a guided tour. Probably most people
would want not want to do the whole seven hours at one shot like Kev,
although I was up for more after the first three hours on the tour we
took last year. For three hours it came out to $30 a person including
tip, split six ways. Three hours does about half of Bermuda. I would
like to do the other half guided some day. I had done the three day bus
pass with guide books a couple times in the past. No comparison. On the
three hour guided tour I saw more, and learned more about Bermuda than
I had on the buses and ferries. I highly recommend doing a guided taxi
van tour.

Our most enjoyable time in Bermuda (been there on 6 cruises) was hiring a
taxi to go from Hamilton to the Dock Yard. We asked him to show us his
country. It took 3 hours at about $30 per hour and was well worth every
penny.

If we can get a group together to split the cost, I would like to do a

customize our tour.

I would like to do the other half which I did not do last time, the
South Shore. They will customize.

Maybe Lola and John would join is, that would make 5 of us. I don't think
Sheree and family would be interested, but I might be wrong.

sue - can't wait untill the journey on Journey!

Oh. I have to add why it ended up being seven hours. I had
originally thought we'd just do a few hours. Silly me, considering
Bermuda roads :-)

You see, we were at the Dockyards, far west end of island, and we
wanted to go all the way to the east end at St Georges. We also
stopped at the Caves, criss-crossed the entire country, mostl North on
the way out and along the South shore the way back. Fantastic to have
someone who knew little places to stop for views, eats, and to have
the A/C on and waiting when you came back to the van on a hot day.

Sitting up front in the left hand passenger side seat was a real
treat, too ;-)

Cheers, Kev
