I live in Texas where half the refugees went and it was ****ing
unbelievable
that there was no national plan for the refugees. My state's

politicians
were scrambling all over and contacting other states to find locations

for
everyone. Refugees showing up at the Astrodome on their own were being
turned away because the city didn't think there would be enough room for
everybody. Any American President who wasn't a complete ****-for-brains
would have coordinated the flow of refugees at the national level and
asked every city and town in the 48 states how much estimated space they
had available. The disaster was an "Incident of NATIONAL Signficance".

I don't know where you live in Texas, but I live in San Antonio, where

many
of the evacuees were sent..We were not covered by the press as much as
Houston was.. As of yesterday, 1300 children are enrolled in our
schools..Vaccinated against all diseases that children must be covered
against to start school..When our mayor was notified that the city would

be
receiving evacuees, Kelly USA was made ready to receive them within 48

hrs--
complete with food, a medical team, supplies and everything required for
their personal needs ...People worked 24/7 to prepare livable quarters.

Mayor Hardberger along with Governor Rick Perry, had things running so
smoothly that buses that were not even expected
and had been turned away from Houston, because the Astrodome was full,
arrived ahead of schedule and were quickly accommodated.
Doesn't sound anything like the mayor of New Orleans or governor of
Louisiana , who had far more time to accomplish this for their own people,
but didn't, does it?....and we didn't need President Bush to tell or order
us what to do! We used our school buses to transport the children of
school age and their families to shop for school clothes, shoes and
supplies...the buses were not standing idly in water as they were in New
Orleans..when they should have been used early, to transport people out

who
had no transportation.

Later plane loads started arriving...we turned no one away..Three 18
wheelers arrived with food and all sorts of supplies on the very first day
and continued to keep coming....I personally saw trucks arriving with

porta
potties and showers..I saw the huge boxes of clothing, much of it new,
donated by good people of San Antonio, being sorted by size and need..

The
processing was so orderly...one bus at a time, with someone boarding each
one with a welcome..They were given water and/or punch to drink, checked

for
possession of guns or weapons of any kind, taken through a line where

those
needing immediate medical assistance or had left medications behind, such

as
insulin, were taken to the medical team..the rest were asked for personal
information and names and addresses of other family members from whom they
had been separated and been sent to other rescue areas..This was to
establish a common data base to enable them find each other as things
settled down..Then there were lines for food and showers...Although we did
not get the coverage of Houston, the people of this city did their part

and
did it proudly.

So true, Sheree!
Your town did not sit around doing nothing either! Wish you would post here
all the great things y'all did!
Very heartwarming what good people do when a crisis arises!

our guys visited biloxi yesterday. it's a ghost town and destroyed, it
looks worse they what we've seen of nola but somehow that's what makes the
news. there's a small town next to ocean springs that hasn't seen fema, red
cross or any thing yet, totally forgotton about. our mayor was ready to
adopt them too!

we have a 2nd truck 1/2 way ready to go, and we just were advised a 3rd one
was donated. all from our little town of 10k people and some wonderful
neighbors in the surroundng communities!
