Default Trip from Toronto to Halifax in September

Hello,

in September, my wife and i will travel from Toronto to Halifax, by
car and by tent.

To get started after we arrived in Toronto, i am looking for:

- a good (big) supermarket in Toronto, maybe close to the airport,
where you can get almost everything

- an outdoor store in Toronto (i may need some outdoor stuff,
repellant, pepper spray, propaine, ... )

We also like to do some outdoor activities, like a multiple day
canoeing trip or horse riding somewhere between Toronto and Halifax.
If you know of any organizers or good areas for that, please let
me know. Any other hints for "things to see and to do" that are
not metioned in the travel guides would be appreciated.

How about the moskitos in September? During our last trip (September
2001 in Alaska) we almost had no moskitos...

Thanks for help....

Stefan

Research the Rideau Canal, think of driving up to Ottawa for a few days.

Bugs should be getting minimal, especially if it has started to get cool at
nights, which might not be the case in Sept...

Hardware/camping stuff, hard to beat a Canadian Tire store. They are
everywhere.

Try a *Poutine* or two, once you get into Quebec; tho lotsa good ones in
'Tario too!

Bon Voyage

There aren't many bugs in September...research the Shubenacadie Canal /
River. There are some good spots to paddle from Truro down. There are also
some decent spots to canoe in NB, along the St. John river....

Loblaw's is a good one - check their website under About Us / Store Finder
to locate the store. In the area that is zoomed out, click on the lighter
colored section. You may have to call around to see which one is closest to
the airport. (www.loblaws.ca).

- an outdoor store in Toronto (i may need some outdoor stuff,

Canadian Tire (www.canadiantire.com) is probably your best bet.

Depends on what kind of stuff you like and where you're looking. Around
Toronto, there's tons of stuff to do. I'd suggest checking out
www.toronto.com for some ideas.

I wouldn't even worry about mosqitoes that time of year.

Thanks for help....

There is no shortage of supermarket stores in Toronto.

The closest outdoor store to the airport is probably LeBarons on Dundas
St in Mississauga. Just drive south from the airport on Hwy. 427 and get
off on Dundas St. it is about 2 km. west of 427.

We also like to do some outdoor activities, like a multiple day

There is not a lot of canoe tripping between those two points. The most
popular spot for canoe tripping is Algonquin Park, about 3 hours north
of Toronto (and you there are several supermarkets right beside the Hwy.
400 in Barrie. You can rent camping equipment at the Portage store in
the park or at any of several outfitters just outside the park. Bear in
mind that September weather can get pretty chilly..

Mosquitos are usually gone by late August.

Have you ever been outside Toronto ?? This country is covered with rivers
and other waterways...how do you think the natives travelled around so
much. There's PLENTY of canoeing opportunities all along the way...you
don't have to travel to a national park....

The OP was asking about canoe tripping, nor canoeing. I am well aware that
there are lots of lakes and rivers in southern Ontario. Most of them run
through private property, so there are few places to camp. Algonquin Park is
about the closest place where there are wilderness canoe routes with
established camp sites.

FYI - There's a WHOLE world outside of Southern Ontario...read the freakin'
subject line TORONTO to HALIFAX...roughly 1600 kms....
