Private reply..... Joystar circling the drain? Now Forced Bankruptcy????
Hi Tom,
Years and Years ago I worked in various capacities for Kmart.... mostly as a store manager when I wasn't doing special projects. Old Man Cunningham died in 1977... he and SS Kresge were the founders of Kmart (remember Kresge 5 and 10 cent stores... same guys). Anyway, they died and the bean counters took over the company. They decided that healthcare was now going to cost every employee $20 a week... it had been free. I got up at that meeting and mentioned that while I had no problem charging NEW employees the $20, that it amounted to a cut in pay for established employees and wasn't ethical to my way of thinking. I was told that was the program and if I didn't implement it, they would find someone who would. (they wanted the full time people to quit and replace them with cheaper part-time people) No problem. The week before the program went into effect, I gave all the full time people in the store a 50 cent an hour raise. $20 a week. That was the beginning of the end of my Kmart career. vbg Are you and Vicki going to be able to make it to Main Street Station next Wednesday? Becca and I will be there at the bar around 6 PM and we can eat at the Brew Pub there. I don't know how many other people from AVLV are going to show up but we'll be there. Good luck, John in LALALand (On the Left Coast) Speaking of bankruptcies, one of my favorite tales of "class" was when a national Mexican restaurant chain tanked in the 90's. The manager of one was told that they were closing for good at Midnight that evening. He had just made payroll that day, and most of the employees at work had their paychecks in their pockets. He knew that since the chain had tanked that day, the paychecks would be worthless, so he called the employees not then on the clock to warn them, and also called all the employees together. Just before the restaurant closed for good, he CASHED all the paychecks out of the till. To me, that was a good guy. -- Nonny Some people are like a Slinky: not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs. |

On the other hand, we had some friends when we were in Dallas who worked for Braniff. Braniff would either cut you a check or do a driect deposit. Thursday morning, Allison went down to her bank, only they said the deposit hadn't been dropped. People who got their checks that afternoon had them bounced almost immediately. THEN Braniff filed for Chap 11 (which went 7). We were flying from Houston to Maui (via DFW) the morning that Pan Am folded. There was a huge line in front of the counter, but no one behind it. -- - dillon I am not invalid When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams come true. Yeah, the bad thing is that these days only about a third of the feeds even honor a CANCEL, so even after the inevitable oh-no second, it's too late. I get "retractions" all the time from people using Outlook. I guess they don't realize that POP3 doesn't do that. But Exchange tells them it's all hunky-dory. -- - dillon I am not invalid When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams come true.
