I did find it interesting the state of heightened security around the
American embassy, but it's always been very secure.

The American and Israeli embassies have always been centers of paranoia
in Paris.

Don't be so technical, man! Montrez un peu d'affection pour la deuxieme chose
quand-meme. Minou means 'pussy' in french, both meanings.

And he lives in France. Bah! Ces anglo-saxons ne changeront jamais. Nex

So everything's fine if you conceal you're Jewish. Cool. I'll have to
remember that.

By the way, "minou" is a slang word in French meaning both "kitty" and
"pubes" (of a woman).

I didn't know that. I thought it meant ''kitten'. I'll look up the German
word for 'killer pit bull' and reinvent myself. Thanks.

Merci bien, Monsieur. I am but a kitten.

Wonderful, as always.

But I've no desire to go if there's a sense of constant
caution and hidden hostility.

There isn't. Where do people get these ideas?

The popular press, I assume. A couple of stories about how the French
opposed the war, a few anecdotes about how rude Parisians can be, and
all of a sudden the paranoia and irrationality kicks in.

Well that sort of post just sparks out hostility...
if you want to go elsewhere just do that
If you're willing to take out of your head such nonsense then come to Paris
But if you believe all the crap rumsfeld-type propaganda then definitely
stay at home !!
Moreover if you dont dress like an american (lol) and close your mouth, who
would believe you're from the US??
sorry

What does it feel like to be in Paris these days? I'd be interested
in hearing about your recent experiences as an American visitor. I
love the city and I'll likely be there soon. But I've no desire to
go if there's a sense of constant caution and hidden hostility.
There are endless places to go otherwise.

No. Really.

Alleged hostility to Americans (other than GWB) is a fabrication.

Was asking about the *feeling* in general. It's also not popular to
be Jewish. I do sense this in Paris and elsewhere. Its not a
fabrication.

Probably for the same reasons several French posters have asked the question
about visiting the US. It's a natural enough question really, and most asked
just to be sure.

Nothing terribly revealing about either nationality here. It's just a human
reaction to political events to ask such a question in a newsgroup called
rec.travel.europe of all things.

Not very dramatic. Sorry. Nex

Thank you for the advice. What do you wear when you are in Manhattan? You
must be super cool. I'd love to share shopping tips.

That's not what I said. I said that nobody knows you're Jewish unless
you tell him. So even if hostility towards Jews were a problem (which
it isn't), it wouldn't affect most Jews because they cannot be
recognized unless they announce their religion.

Nobody cares if you are Jewish in Paris. In fact, nobody is likely to
know, unless you dress the part with religious accoutrements.

Why are there so many paranoid American Jews, by the way?

I didn't know that. I thought it meant ''kitten'.

It does, but it's also the equivalent of "pussy," in the sexual sense.
It isn't often used that way, though.
