Default Excursions - Montego Bay

My wife and I are going on a cruise next month. One destination is
Montego bay. I am looking for suggestions on an excursion while we are
there. To make this easy, we are not beach/water people - no scuba, no
snorkeling, no jetski.
Our (her) preference is sightseeing and glass-bottom boats (we did that
one). Within these restrictions, we will accept all ideas.
One my wife would like but is hesitant - a visit to Dunn's River Falls
and Mystic Mountain which has a chairlift.
The hesitation is based on two things; 1) 90 minute trip one way, 2) the
climb up the falls.
Is the 90 minute ride worth it?
is the only way to the top of the falls by 'climbing?' For old people,
this not not sound inviting.

You enter Dunns River falls at the top of the falls. There is a paved
walkway and wooden stairs you can use to walk down and back up without
entering the water. I have been there several times during an extended
stay in Ocho Rios but personally I would not make a three hour round
trip from Montego Bay to see it. Check out Rose Hall in Montego Bay.

The climb up the falls is worth it but the 90 minute trip is not. I
have done that trip and it is a bad ride.

Hi, J,

I climbed the falls on Christmas Day! I thought the 90-min ride was
worth it, but only because every time we cruise, we seem to stop in
MoBay, never Ocho Rios, so I was tired of waiting for the chance to do
the falls. They are a lot of fun to climb--you have to wear a swimsuit
(or be willing to get at least your pants wet) and do some moderate,
wet boulder climbing. The guides will assist you if you need help.
Some people decided they weren't comfortable with it and exited at the
first opportunity. Age doesn't have anything to do with it--just your
agility, balance, overall fitness, willingness to be in cold water,
etc.

As attractive as the falls are, and they do keep the place clean and
well-maintained, I wouldn't characterize them as spectacular enough to
make the drive just for viewing from the stairs and interim viewing
platforms. On the other hand, I didn't do the Mystic Mountain, so
maybe someone can tell you about that and the two combined would be
appealing enough to you to warrant the trip.

Have a wonderful cruise!

Hi Jay. You may want to consider the Mountain Valley Raft ride down the
river. I know you're not great water people, but you really don't get wet
and it's a pretty nice little ride. We did this last September in the
pouring rain and had a ball. Enjoy your cruise.

This may not be suitable for you, but in Montego Bay, I like the Sunset
Beach Resort. There is a shuttle from the pier, it is $3 each way.

It is an all inclusive, so you get a day pass and you stay as long as
you like. They have swimming pools, a hot tub, the food is good, so are
the drinks. They have a water park with a lazy river and inner tubes.
They have beaches, volley ball, mini golf, a casino (although I did not
try it). It was $40, the last time I bought a day pass. You can get
towels there, so you do not have to bring towels with you. The people
are nice and the rest rooms are clean.

I forgot which folder I stored it in. But somewhere I have an annual
report of the number of people who get injured climbing Dun's falls.
The ironic thing is, that Dunn's Falls isn't the falls featured in the
early James Bond movie "Dr. No". The location manager found a better
location on Dominica.

Hi, Brian,

I would not be surprised to learn of injuries climbing the falls--it's
a natural opportunity for slip and fall. But the park operator takes
several steps to minimize injury. I was impressed with (a) the well-
considered installation of concrete or similar "fake" boulders and
footholds at points where the main climbing path needed some "fill"--
the improved safety was an acceptable trade-off for the loss of an all-
natural environment, (b) the early exit opportunity they provided for
those who quickly realized this activity was not for them, and (c) the
number of staff they put in the water with you for guidance. I was
equivocal about their practice of having everyone hold hands and climb
as a chain. I think encouraging you to rely on a helping hand for
support is generally a good thing. But I soon figured out there was a
weak link ahead of me, and also that I felt confident about navigating
on my own, so my daughter and I broke free and generally climbed solo,
just using each other as needed. The guides saw we were "able," and
allowed us to climb alternate routes, which was so much more pleasant
than being stuck in a slow-moving herd.

Not to mention the "domino" effect that holding hands in a chain. The
buddy system works far better. I've done some basic level spelunking. A
chain would be totally disastrous in such a situation. Each of us
paired with a more experienced partner. Nobody got hurt.
