Cairo in January
I have two questions:
1) If you as a westerner were in Cairo during the first half of January 2012, would you go to the Egyptian Museum presuming demonstrations were existing in Tahrir Square as they have been the last few days? We're staying on the outskirts of Cairo so other than the Egyptian Museum and possibly seeing Islamic Cairo, we won't be anywhere near downtown Cairo for the most part. Is there any way to learn the open or closed status of the Egyptian Museum on the web? 2) It was recommended to me that we should go everywhere in Egypt with a tour guide but that doesn't quite make sense to me. Presuming all is safe, why would I need a tour guide when all we would be doing is taking a taxi to the Egyptian Museum and going inside for the day? Thanks a bunch. |

Whether you like the idea of a guide or not is something that only you can decide, but from a cost pov guides are relatively cheap and poorly negotiated taxi fares are expensive I suspect that you will find the cost of a guide picking you up at you hotel, taking you around the museum (and anything else in the centre that you should see) and taking you back to your hotel is cheaper than a taxi each way - unless you are a very very very good haggler tim |

The rationale for the guide is that it will avoid hassle from other would-be guides. Even if being bothered by such people doesn't faze you, you will inevitably be bothered by them- and no matter how much you try and blend in, you will still obviously be a tourist. We visited Egypt for two weeks in January in the late 90s. Our week in Cairo had no guide, our Nile cruise from Luxor down to Aswan and back did. We got virtually no hassle when with a guide- in Cairo itself the hassle was manageable, and most people are just going about their business. In Giza it was quite a different story. I can't comment on your first question- sorry. -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "[Do you think the world learned anything from the first world war?] No. They never learn." -Harry Patch (1898-2009) |

martin defends everything that is OT, boring and useless.
So he defends the second Cairo post that has nothing to do here. You need to learn a new hobby too instead of creating one Egypt thread a week on this group. No fear, martin will help you. Martin recommends putting Runge in your kill file. He has yet to contribute anything useful here. -- Martin |

I personally prefer "the canal in October" to Cairo in January. It was simpler to look at that instead of polluting the NG once more.
