Can anyone suggest sources for a cheap flight from PEK to CKG ...
CITS, other travel agents, discount carriers, airlines, etc.?

If you have the time, get your ticket while you are in Beijing.

There should be tons of flights daily from Beijing to Chongqing. Buy
your ticket in the travel agency of the hotel (most hotels from three
stars upwards have an own travel agency). Don't buy it in advance from
abroad, as you will not get the discount (discount range from 30-70% of
the listed price and you always get them when you buy the plane ticket
in China).

as soon as possible after I arrive (14:25 31 Jul 2007 from San Francisco
UAL 889) on the same day.

Is it risky to make no reservation and plan to look for a flight after I
arrive?

Do you know what airlines would be good candidates?
The discounts I hear about ... are they available only from travel agents?
Are such travel agents located in the airport?

Beijing for Chongqing as soon as possible after I arrive (14:25 31 Jul
2007 from San Francisco UAL 889) on the same day.

Are such travel agents located in the PEK airport?

It should be possible to arrive in PEK airport and buy a ticket for
Chongqing there, although I can't confirm it.

amadeus.net lists 19 flights PEK-CKG leaving on July 31st after 16:00 (6
direct connections, 13 with one stop).

Since there are 19 flights on that day after 16:00 (see my other
message), the risk is pretty low. And even if you were extremely unlucky
and all flights were full it would not be so terrible to spend one night
in Beijing.
