Iraq elections vindicate GW Bush

03/04/2010

"AFP - "Victory at Last," proclaims the magazine cover. Elections in
Iraq, seven years after the US invasion, could belatedly prove former
president George W. Bush right, Newsweek magazine suggests in its
latest issue.

Experts are divided, but acknowledge democracy is progressing in the
country invaded by a US-led coalition in March 2003 to topple
dictator
Saddam Hussein.

"Something that looks an awful lot like democracy is beginning to
take
hold in Iraq. It may not be 'mission accomplished' but it's a start,"
said Newsweek......"

An election where the government cherry picks which
parties will be allowed to run.

That is your idea of democracy, no doubt.

Iraq bars 15 political parties from upcoming elections

BAGHDAD -- At least 15 parties will be banned from upcoming
parliamentary elections because they have been linked to Saddam
Hussein's Baath Party or have promoted Baathist ideals, Iraqi
officials said Thursday.

The decision by the Justice and Accountability Commission, in
charge of cleansing high-level Baathists from the ranks of the
government and security forces, seemed to be an attempt to purge
candidates with links to the old political order, many of whom
are popular among secular nationalist voters. The move is a blow
to hopes of bringing opposition figures -- who turned to violent
resistance over the past seven years -- into the political fold,
part of the U.S. strategy to bolster the government.

Deadly Attacks Mar First Day of Voting in Iraqi Elections

By STEVEN LEE MYERS and MARC SANTORA

Published: March 4, 2010

BAGHDAD ‹ Iraq opened its polls early on Thursday for tens of thousands of
soldiers and police officers and other security workers, but a series of
attacks in Baghdad aimed directly at them marred the first day of voting the
country¹s parliamentary elections.

Iraqi security forces at the site of one of the series of bombings on
Wednesday in the city of Baquba northeast of Bagdhad.

The attacks killed at least 12 people and wounded dozens more, according to
preliminary reports from Iraqi officials.
The attacks occurred despite the overwhelming presence of Iraqi security
personnel on the streets in Baghdad and in cities across the country. The
government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, who faces a fierce
contest to win a second term, declared a holiday from Thursday to Sunday,
allowing security officials to vote early so they would be free to work on
Election Day.
Two suicide bombers struck two different polling stations at schools in the
center of Baghdad, killing seven soldiers and wounding at least 35 other
people.
Those attacks followed another involving a hidden bomb, which struck a
school in northern Baghdad. That school will also be a polling station on
Sunday, but early voting was not taking place on Thursday. That blast killed
at least five people and wounded 22.

over 50 were injured at a free lunch at Ram Janki temple. Hindu

Damn! Why did the British grant independence to India. "Those people"
weren't ready for democracy or independence after all.

Comparing what the Indians did by rebelling against Britain, can in no
way, be compared to bombing them into submission like Bush/Cheney did
Iraq. So we have God given right to spread democracy by invading and
occupying sovereign nations, cause "we know what is best for them"?

Not 'there' - should be 'their'.

I would never have bothered normally to point out what is after all
a common error if you hadn't posted the fact that you have appointed
yourself as a Hallway Monitor :-)

What is this supposed to prove?

that the forces o Ben Laden are present, alive and active.

So you admit that they are forces of bin Laden? Because in another
thread, Holman would have us believe that 92% of the detainees at
Gitmo are not part of any effort by Osama to do bad things.

Regarding whether or not bin Ladenism is alive and active in the
Middle East, you bet it is. That's why it is so important to create
this countervailing force for freedom.

federal system is that the Congress exercises only those powers
delegated to it, while the remainder are reserved to the States or
to the people. The manner in which this Court has construed the
Commerce Clause amply illustrates the extent of this fiction.",
