Default Car & Driver X Toulouse? Carcassonne info?

Thinking of flying into Toulouse, driving to Carcassonne & spending 3
nights there (is this too much?), then driving on through Perpignan &
Girona to Barcelona. Problem is, my husband doesn't drive in Europe
anymore & is totally down on the idea of me driving (trying not to be
insulted...). Anyway, has anyone done this and could you recommend a
private car & driver service Toulouse/Carcassonne, then 3 days later,
Carcassonne/Barcelona?

I thought one night in Carcasonne was plenty. It's charming, but
limited. Unless we missed something interesting outside the
'medieval' city?

Have you seen Provence already? If not, I'd fly into Charles de
Gaulle and hop the TGV to Avignon for a couple of days, then take the
train to Carcassonne for one night. Then rent your car if you like.
Or just spend the three days in Avignon and surrounds, with a rental
car, and skip Carcassonne.

When we were in that part of the world, I thought about driving or
taking the train through Andorra - it sounded scenic and interesting.
However, the closer we got to it, the less interesting the local
people thought Andorra was - so we skipped it. Still not sure whether
we did the right thing ...

Don't know about your driving, so I guess I should defer to your
husband. As a U.S. driver who has driven around France, Italy and
Spain, I can say that drivers in those countries are generally more
courteous and patient than in the U.S. (except for the largest cities
and the occasional jerk - the same as the U.S.). Just don't commit
the two unforgiveable errors: (1) fail to yield when entering a
roundabout, and (2) fail to keep right on a multi-lane highway except
when passing.

Had I three nights in that part of the world, I would not spend all of them
in Carcassonne. Tolouse is actually a marvelous city; why not spend the
first night there?

I can't advise about hiring a driver, but can't help but notice that all of
the cities you mention are linked by excellent rail service.

Have a great trip!

To return to your actual question, you can find cars with drivers by going
to www.pagesjaunes.fr. entering "location d'automobiles avec chauffeur" for
Activité and Toulouse (or whereever) for Localité.

Don't know about a driver but one night and one full day in Carcassonne is
plenty, IMO. It's not very big and doesn't take much time to see. And be
warned that driving into the town itself is a bit of a nightmare. The
streets are extremely narrow, the system is one way and it's not worth
having a car while you're there at all - all exploring is done on foot
within Carcassonne. We stayed at Le Dongeon which was very pleasant and has
a car park somewhere down a few lanes at the back. My husband is not at all
fazed by narrow lanes but once we finally parked he said the car was
definitely not coming out again before we left! I think diners having to
get up and move their chairs off the street so we could drive up it unnerved
both of us a little!

What you say is true of the old city of Carcassonne - I can't *imagine*
wanting to have a car there! - but there's another whole part of the
city that's not any different to drive around than most any other french
city. That said, there's not much to see other than the old city (La
Cité) but Narbonne, not too many miles farther along is a very
interesting stop, with fascinating Roman sights, and the drive down the
coast from there toward Perpignan is lovely.
