Default Italy becomes smoke free - fact or fiction

I heard a rumour (from an Italian) that Bars and Restaurants are going
to be smoke free from 10/01/2005,
can anyone confirm this ?

Yes. A fine of Euro 25,00-50.00 is the penalty for smokers.
Restaurants and bars will provide for smokers in special sections.
Also in all other public places and trains, smoking is prohibited form
Jan.10th on.

I can confirm that if it happens, Italians will ignore it!

On the mainland to near Venice (at a water taxi / bus area), I saw a
sign prohibiting smoking. The fine print mentioned a law from the 1970s,
with the penalty being 1000 to 10000 lira ~= 50 cents to 5 euros.

They haven't ignored no smoking in
offices. In fact those working abroad don't
smoke in offices, even where there is no
ban.

Smoking was also banned on their Eurostar Trains one year ago and then
was limited on their InterCity trains. Now it is completely banned on
all trains.
I didn't notice anyone smoking on the Eurostar trains last March nor
have I read on the various European travel forums I follow of people
ignoring this ban in the past year. Regards, Walter (a smoker
