Don't know about the train number, but it's very reasonable to get a driver
and a car from a local Travel Agent, maybe even wait til you get to Delhi
then haggle. You'd maybe want to consider an overnight stay unless you want
them to drive back in the dark which might not be much fun.....
Staying overnight also gives the driver time to sell his usual bootload of
whisky to the locals, so you won't get charged extra.
There's not 'that' much to see on the road except for the Lotus Temple which
is very impressive. Oh, and it's meant to be the smoothest road in India
which doesn't say a lot really, so make sure they have a decent car.

Yes, someone will probably intercept you on the way into the train station
to propose just that.

I think the number is 2179 (arrives at Nizammudin station in Old
Delhi)

Definitely feasible to hire a car and driver. I think the train
travel will be more comfortable though.

Thanks all for the help. We are staying overnight in Agra . Will probably
hire a car & driver. The train leaves too early in the morning. What would
you expect to pay Delhi-Agra & return?

Thanks

And faster too. I don't see any reason to take a car.

I stayed at the Mughal Sheraton and loved it. They have a great deck from
which you can sit and see the Taj. Nothing like watching the sun setting
behind it.

If at all possible take another 1/2 day and drive out to see Fatehpuhr Sikri,
just outside of Agra.

I agree on this! I caught a local bus and went from Agra to Fatehpur
Sikri, there were rather few people and tourists there (compared to
Agra), and I spent a nice day out there.
