Ah, ok.. that's weird though since I've travelled once LAX-LHR on BA's
Economy Plus, and the seat did feel bigger in every way. It must be
an optical illusion then.

Is the 18.5" measured with or without armrests?

Since according to the website
http://www.britishairways.com/travel...v/public/en_us
the seat is wider. Though, it might make a big difference if the
armrest is wider and the person isn't sitting right next to you.
You don't get that feeling of sardines in a can that way.

Any suggestions for how I can fly (right now or at any time) from Los

that matter---given that I don't fit in economy-class seats and can't
afford 1st-class?

if you have time (and money) .... amtrak to NYC, then QM2 to England.
especially the transatlantic is not really cheap:

business class on a plane is probably cheaper...

Business, or how would for example BA's Economy Plus do? Especially
seats where there is no seat in front of you.

IIRC, Economy Plus and Virgin's equivalent are the same economy seats with a bit
more leg room. Doesn't help with seat width.

No, that is true of UA. BA and Virgin have wider seats for their plus
section compared to regular economy. BA's World Traveller Plus
(premium economy) has gotten good reviews for good leg room and width.
I would go with that.

I would suggest two options.

Business class tickets to Europe can be purchased for $2100 RT with a
50day notice.

Or you can call the airlines and explain that you cannot fit into 1
seat, you have a medical reason (large body size) for not being able
to do this. Under this circumstance they will sell you two seats in
one reservation. Don't worry about airport or inflight crew "sizing
you up" so to speak. Once you have that type of tickets they are not
allowed by the disablities act to question you. Of course you will pay
for two tickets.

You can fly on airlines that have "Plus" or "Club" seats. These are
seats that are similar to business class, but have the same service as
economy.

While Virgin does indeed offer a wider seat in their plus section,
the British Air seat is only 18.5" wide - no different than
their regular coach seat.

That measurement is between the armrests, and the armrests are wider on
the "Plus" seats. The BA World Traveller Plus seats are wider than
regular economy seats. They have two fewer seats per row on their 747s,
and one fewer seat per row on their 777s. That gives extra shoulder and
elbow room, which is important to a tall passenger.

One thing I know---I think I know---is that airlines are not covered by
the Americans with Disabilities Act. They successfully lobbied to be
excluded, as they are covered by the Air Travelers Act. The latter,
however, does not prevent discrimination against tall people like me.

Thanks to all for suggestions, which I am duly making note of. (And no,
I don't have the money for QM2. I'm a pianist, therefore impoverished.)

Maybe they will hire you to play the piano. I am sure they have at least
one piano bar.
