Default Cz/Germany trip

Hey all

Im flying to Prague in 2 weeks, arrive late at night with sleazyjet.

I need to make my way to Zittau(where ever that is in Germany) to see a
girl. Im not sure if im hitchhiking or if a train is really cheap, i would
have flown to Berlin where i know but its much much cheaper to Prague and i
find German trains expensive.

Does anyone know how to get to the Prague train station from the airport,
and any useful websites...

I also have to take some whisky as presents for her family, i know that
wouldnt have been a problem if i had gone to Germany direct, but what about
the border i have to go through? I think 3 or 4 bottles and some Newcastle
brown ale. (the whisky is what i picked up in Rome 2 weeks ago, a third
cheaper than back home)

I usually nip over the German/Cz or Polish border and grab some wodka and
rolling baccy in kilo packs, but this time im also flying back from Prague
rather than Berlin so how much can i bring back from Cz to England?

many thanks.

Oh if anyone wants to see some pics of Rome where i was 2 weeks ago

Useful sites:
The Prague Public Transport site is http://www.dp-praha.cz/en - a mine
of all you could want to know.

The general Czech Public Transport site is
http://www.vlak-bus.cz/JRCis.asp?tt=c&cl=E5

http://www.jizdenka.cz/(4zl1olmilidnvgv2feyvm2m3)/IT.aspx - Czech
railways' international tariff calculator, says that a second class
single ticket from Prague to Zittau is 270 Kc or 9 euro.

Presumably you already know about http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/ - German
railways' timetable site?

Easiest route: Bus 119 from the airport to Dejvicka metro station (end
of metro line A), take line A to Muzeum (5 stops), then switch to line C
("smer Ladvi" - Ladvi direction) , hlavni nadrazi, the main station, is
the next stop, Nadrazi Holesovice, Holesovice station, is 4 stops from
Muzeum. Journey should take a little over an hour, including changes,
and cost 20 Kc (about 50p) - ask for a "prestupni jizdenka" (changing
ticket) if you can't figure out how to use the ticket machines (which
last time I was in Prague worked in Czech only).

The Prague Public Transport journey planner doesn't currently seem to be
offering journeys along Metro line C, rather directing you via bus or
metro line B to Smichov station, then onto a train to hl.n. , though
it's only a few minutes' walk from Muzeum to hl.n

Alternately, take bus 100 from the airport to Zlicin station (about 25
minutes, terminus of Metro line B), take line B to Smichovske nadrazi (8
stops, about 15 minutes) and change to a surface train there to hl.n
Fare is 30 Kc, apparently.

For the search engine, the airport is " Letiste Praha Ruzyne", the main
station is "Praha hl.n" and Holesovice station is "Praha-Holesovice".

You say you have a late night arrival - the last time you can do the bus
100 / Zlicin metro trip is 2239 from the airport; after that there's a
routing at 2305 involving the 179 and 218 buses to get you to Ruzyne
station to get a train to hl.n arriving 2357. After that you have to
wait until 0203, 0303 or 0403 when an hourly series of connections of
buses and night-trams is involved (including a 61 minute wait at
Vrsovice station at 3.30 a.m. in one case!).

In principle, as much as you need for personal behalf. Well, this might
be interpreted by cusoms officers in different ways.

No probs! By the way, if it helps to ask the way, the word for a railway
station is "nadrazi" (pronounced roughly "nad-ra-ZEE"), but the word for
a metro station is "stanice" ("sta-NEET-sa"). Czech's a fairly
straightforward language to pronounce once you figure out what effect
all the little "hooks" on the top of the letters do! (Apart from r-hacek
which appears in the composer Dvorak's name - that's often a bugger to
pronounce!).

I know Niesky, Cottbus and have been to Zittau once, but by car, went all
over E Germany without a map or plan!! Her family want to take me to Dresden
for some xmas festival thing. Was there in the summer but im not a religous
person and dont celebrate xmas but they say the festive alkohol is very
nice.

Her family like scotch whisky, and for her brother i get English beer, which
i dont like compared to Cz or DDR beer. I know the last time i went to that
region i went by coach to/from London/Berlin and brough loads of wodka,
pupen schulch? black beer. and the tunnel customs didnt care, but this is
the first time to and from Prague. Im not too worried as i smoke and drink
a lot but was a little curious.

Im not sure as if im on the train it stops at the border what is the normal
procedure?. My several times of going to Poland and CZ from E Germany are
funny. They always check me out with interpol for maybe 20 minutes, although
never once have they searched me or the car, maybe it was because the
borders i used were not full of tourists and i was with a German girl. my
last trip to Cz was with all her family, me and 7 Germans, they still made
us pull over in the people carrier and stop for a long tine, i think its
funny, even though my my passort had many stamps int he previous few days.
Before my last trip i looked online to see what i could take smoke/alkohol
bewteen Germany and Pl. and she asked the border guards who said totally
differant amount, like 20 cigs only where as the official Polish website
said .5 or 1kg of baccy and a nice amount of wodka. They knew we went over
the border for that and didnt care or search us on the way back, apart from
the German guards didnt want to let me back in as i had my England football
shirt and flag with me I smoke Szlachetny or Hercules rolling tobacco or
Pall Mall.

I know Poland is in the EU but not sure about Cz. As i often buy lots of
local alkohol and bring it back to UK for me, from Italy a few weeks ago i
got lots of nice local wodka, grappa? and sambuka etc etc.

If you want to see a English guy surrounded by Germans take a look here, was
my last German trip
http://www.julianhales.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/pics.htm was very nice. In
England we think Germans drink more than us, but her 2 Gross Farters said i
drank more then them by a lot.

Her father usually takes me to airbases, ex military and im like a little
boy in a toyshop. Nothing like a Mig21 or Su22 to get my heart going!!

Ahem. Your new German word for the day is « Schneechaos » (where
"Schnee" means "snow"). Go see
http://news.google.co.uk/news?hl=de&ned=de&q=Schneechaos for the
recent hilarity.

I'm distusted, for sure, and I don't even know what that is!

Roofs of buildings collapsed in NL. On Monday night 90,000 Germans
were without electricity. Wait for the floods.

Yet I've yet to see the word "sneeuwchaos" anywhere in the Dutchophone
meeja. What gives?

You looked too late.

Maybe. But I do have some RSS feeds...

The papers were full of it at the weekend. 850 km
traffic jams on Friday. Some places (us) had force 9 gales others had
blizzards some places up north had a windless sunny day.

I saw reports of all this, but not the word "sneeuwchaos". ("Sneeuw"
and "chaos" in close proximity, yes, but not adjacent. I am very
particular about these things.)

There was a bit on the TV from near Hengelo - the roof of a new
shopping/office complex collapsing under the weight of snow. Somebody
on roof with a ruler shown measuring at least 3" of snow on the roof.

Three (3) _inches_ (")? I'd have a word with the architect, for sure.
