How's the planning for the Orkney trip going?

Oh, I've been enjoying myself digging up books set there or factual
books about it. For me that's always part of the fun.

For me, too.

Have you discovered Sigurd Towrie's website yet?

http://www.orkneyjar.com/index.html

Orkney produces some excellent cheeses, biscuits, and whisky. And if
you're interested in silver, there are a couple of companies producing
really good designs.

Not before. Thanks 8-)

Not really, but I enjoy looking.

Here's something else to look at -

You'll get to see some of the scenery, and hear Orcadian speech patterns.

Both the Orkneys and the Shetlands have excellent tourist offices
which will send you a lot of good free information. Their
accommodation information makes for some interesting choices of
unusual places to stay. Make sure to visit the Tomb of the Eagles if
for no other reason than to hold a Stone Age tool, you'll see how that
stone is one of the finest tools ever lovingly crafted, fitting the
hand perfectly with also perfect balance. After holding it, I've
always considered it a shame that you can't touch things in a museum.

I've also developed a taste for Highland Park Scotch after visiting
the northernmost Scotch distillery, a couple of kilometers further
north than Scapa Flow's!!!!! Make sure to visit the Rennibister
(spelling?) house, a prehistoric dwelling set under the ground in a
narrow farm lane between two buildings on someone's farm, mainly
interesting for its location!!!

I had a wonderful vacation spending a week on each of the Orkney and
Shetland Island groups, and heartily recommend a visit to both.

Oh, I already have them "collected".

I'm not sure if that's listed in my itinerary, but I can add it if it's
something I don't have to crawl into. I have a flexible tour scheduled:
I'm the whole group 8-)

I'm more a wine person than hard liquor, but I'll have to try it.

That IS already on the list, as is, of course, Skara Brae and lots
more. I'm a major history geek!

And then there are the Faroes, too. Problem is, I'm not as young and
tough as i once was. Despite the age in my head, my body is 76 already.

My iPad's Safari got a message that the video can't be opened, so I'm
limited to text on that page. I have yet to explore the other one, but
I've bookmarked it.

There's a small amount of crawling to get into the actual tomb
chamber.

Ah, Skara Brae, the world's first indoor plumbing!

Don't miss the Faroes, my favorite country "in" Europe. You can take
the ferry to the Shetlands, and the Faroe flagged ferry Norrona puts
into Lerwick once a week on its way to the Faroes and Iceland. I had
my most enjoyable time of anywhere in Europe interacting with the
locals there, and Europe's tallest sea cliffs (2000 ft) along the
north coast are spectacular, although in the future I would pass on
the puffin!
