Default Paris Conditions

We returned yesterday from nine days In Paris and Reims, and I would be
happy to provide what info I can if anyone has questions about current
conditions. We saw several demonstrations, but they didn't seem to have much
effect on the transit systems or tourism in general.

We did lots of walking in the old neighborhoods in the Left Bank; attended
the monthly presentation of the crown of thorns in Notre Dame; went to the
Jardin des Plants and the old zoo there; saw several Roman sites; spent 1.5
days in the Louvre; went to the Marmottan and Rodin; attended concerts at
the Sainte-Chapelle and Ste Julien-des-Pauvre; drank some decent red wines;
visited some (beautiful) cathedrals in Reims; saw Jim Morrison's grave, etc.
If you are interested in the Impressionists, there is a spectacular
exhibition of Monet paintings in the Grand Palais. They have Monets from
the D'Orsay museum, which have been removed temporarily during some
construction work there, as well as others from collections around the
world. (Because of its popularity, getting a ticket involves advance
reservations or a three-hour wait.) Prices in Paris are high, as usual. -
Expect to pay 10 Euros or more for a three-course dinner in the Left Bank,
although meals are still service-compris and include all the French bread
you want.

Jim

Urm... €10 (10 Euro) for a 3 course meal is an example of high prices?
Typo?

Must be a typo. A week ago I paid €10 for a bottle of sparkling water
in a Paris restaurant.

I expect to pay more than that in a third rate country pub in Northern
England.

In general prices are somewhat overrate in England. But truly you don't
find a restaurant in Western Europe (not in France [let alone Paris] for
sure) serving three course meals for 10 euros. In 1989 when the good old
German Democratic Republic was still in place, I ordered a generous
plate in the Rathauskeller in Alexanderplatz for around eight Mickey
Mouse marks equivalent to around 80-90 Bundespfennings.

Not in black market but I changed money in banks of west Berlin. It was
quite legal according to laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is
also true that importing this money to GDR was illegal.

Yes, it was black market once in the DDR.
You could use the money for "fine" eating and such, not for lodging.

Wrong again. I did pay about accommodation by local money. For a travel
agent I paid five bundesmarks but for the landlady I paid in local money.

Not "again", using DDR Marks bought in West Germany was black market that
you were fueling, as for lodging well you had a special treatment then.
Lodging had to be paid in DM and you had a change voucher that showed
everything.
Controls were strict coming out.
....or else you travelled during the Wende and that's another story.
