Default Heathrow Terminals

In a couple of weeks, my wife and I will be arriving at London
Heathrow terminal 3, and will have to change to a plane departing from
terminal 5.

Can someone tell me how we get from one terminal to another (walk?
train? bus?)? Do we have a choice? We don't mind walking if it won't
take too long (we have 2-1/2 hours between flights if we arrive on
time).

And will we have to go through security again at terminal 5? Or does
that depend on which transportation option we choose?

From the Heathrow website -
"Use Heathrow Express trains for a free transfer between Heathrow
Central and Terminal 5. This quick, convenient service runs every 15
minutes and the journey takes about three minutes. Please ensure you
board the correct train as Heathrow Express also runs non-stop to London
Paddington.

Heathrow Central is between Terminals 1 and 3, which are a few minutes'
walk away via underground walkways and are signposted from the
platforms. The Terminal 5 rail station is in the basement of the
terminal and linked to check-in and arrivals by express lifts."

Thanks. I had seen that, but I wanted to find out about the
alternatives (if there are any) and I also wanted to find out how to
avoid the inconvenience of going through security again (if possible).

You can transfer Airside. Look for signs saying "Flight Connections" when
you arrive at T3. You will have to go through Security again. If you are on
a through ticket (not two separate bookings) your bags should get
through-checked from origin to destination and you shouldn't need to collect
them at Heathrow.

Must be a Heathrow thing. I haven't had to go through security
elsewhere if I didn't stray into the wrong shopping area 8-)

He'll have to pass through immigration and customs to get to the train
and through a full check-in procedure to get back into T5 if he does that.

Head for 'Flight Connections' when you get off in T3.

Yes you'll have to go through security again.

Depending on the queue for 'air side' security it can take anything from
40 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, but it's safe to assume about an hour
gate-to-gate.
