Default One-Way Europe to the States

I'm looking for a cheap one-way ticket from Suttgart, Germany to
Chicago in the middle of July.

I've thought about buying a round-trip ticket and not using the
return, even though the airlines don't like that too much. Anyone
heard of the airlines actually charging people for not using the
return?

Is there any way to cancel the return part of the ticket?

Can I buy a one-way ticket from Europe to the States from a travel
agent in the U.S, or do I have to buy the ticket in Europe?

Any ideas to make this flight as cheap as possible would be very
helpful.

A couple of years ago I had a round trip already booked to the USA. Then
my employer asked me to go on business. They provided a new ticket and I
actually flew transatlantic both ways on the new ticket. However, my
original ticket also had some domestic legs which I used without anyone
batting an eyelid. Also, the original ticket was booked with my wife who
used that original ticket. When I dropped her off for her flight back to
the UK I asked the check in staff if they still had me listed. They said
"yes" so I explained what was happening (there had been a possibility that I
might have been able to return on this flight so I'd never cancelled it) and
they seemed quite happy.

Not precisely your circumstance but an actual example.

Sean,
i just came across this tool SmartRover on download.com. it definitely
suits ur requirements and fairly easy to use. just one form and it ll do
the job for u. it searches around 15 most famous websites, for flexible
dates (if u opt for) and alerts u via email as soon as it finds a flight
within ur budget. moreover, it continues searching in the background for
days and keep alerting u about better n better deals online. i found it
worth using. do try.

it might not be more expensive to buy a one-way from a travel agent in
europe. check http://www.aeroplan.de as they usually have some good
deals on oneway fares. Those fares usually can be booked at any travel
agent in Germany. As taxes usually are queite high on transatlantic a
one way might end up cheaper even if the price without tax seems to be
not much underneath the rt price.
