The Walmart-ization of the airlines has begun.

Begun?

Actually there has been an aircraft repair facility in Tijuana Mexico.
Pratt and Whitney, most of the commercial airlines, a number of private
carriers, and small aircraft all have contracts with this plant.
Aerovias de Mexico S.A. de C.V. (Aeromexico).

It opened in 2002.

Pratt and Whitney have a 5 year contract for overhaul there.

In Quebec they overhaul Landing Gear.

The new Boeing Aircraft are mostly made in the Pacific Rim Countries
and shipped to the plant in Seattle for assembly.

Most the regional jets are built in Brazil.

So if you are trying to make a case to protect U.S. jobs, you need to
look elsewhere.

For someone with an MS, you're not very well-informed. Walmart
imports mainly from China. As a matter of fact, Walmart is responsible
for over 10% of all Chinese imports to the USA. Hence my comment
that Walmart-ization has begun with the China connection. I did not
state that outsourcing had just begun, now did I?

Casey,

The way I read your post, it sounded like you were complaining about
the U.S. loosing Aviation Jobs.

Walmart being responsible for 10% of the imports from China really has
nothing to do with aviation. Not really a factor.

Boeing has been using the Pacific Rim countries to make parts for the
777 for a number of years. That was when the exporting of the jobs to
the Pacific Rim countries began, not with this contract.

That United is trying to cut costs by outsourcing jobs is a reflectiong
of the current ecomonic climit. Nobody wants to pay much for an
airline ticket, and still wants to fly from point A to point B. The
airlines still have to maintain the aircraft. The mechanics wages are
high. Contracting out is one way that United thinks they can save
money. NWA thinks they can save money by breaking the Union. American
Airlines think they can save money by leaning out their maintenance
process in house.

The price of fuel is making airlines try everything they can think of
to cut costs. Wages are the next highest cost.

This is not fair to labor, but the economic climit we are in, these are
the facts of life.
