Default vote for moderators for rec.travel.europe

i am saddened by the mass of nonsensical posts appearing on this
travel group.
it seems that some people, who have given up trying to achive anything
useful in life, hope to achive notoriety by spamming this group in an
attempt to gain some sort of attention.

usenet is the oldest host for europe travel discussions and it would
be a shame for it to be extinguished by this garbage. what would be
involved to make the group moderated?

It's a fair point, but do bear in mind that on-topic thread titles
don't necessarily mean on-topic thread content. I can't remember the
group /ever/ being free of off-topic discussion. (And, if anything, the
off-topic titles actually make it easier to avoid the irrelevant
material.)

I use a threaded news reader and mark all off-topic threads to be
ignored. That means that most of the idiotic postings get purged
before I see the headings.

Filtering for multiple newsgroup postings also helps. I filter out any
alt.* or soc.* postings from r.t.e.

You're new, aren't you? Newbies always call for moderators at some
point.

usenet is the oldest host for europe travel discussions and it would
be a shame for it to be extinguished by this garbage. what would be
involved to make the group moderated?

Newbies always think that groups are going to be extinguished by spam.
They don't realize that veterans of USENET aren't reading the spam,
anyway, so the spam is unimportant.

Stop reading it, and it won't bother you.

Moderated groups typically wither and die in USENET. That's why
virtually all groups are unmoderated.

Looks about the same.

If you don't like it here, there are plenty of moderated, censored
forums on the Web for you to visit. In fact, I think people who feel as
you do are better off on such forums, where they can interact with
people of like mind. I'll continue to vote for free speech, myself.

This coming from someone who has posted only twice in the last two months,
one of them being a silly piece of tourist advice that suggests poring
over maps to memorize them so as not to look lost, and to carry a
political or soccer newspaper, and another post that made absolutely no
sense at all.

This in use net. OT stuff gets posted and threads digress. If you have
been reading this group for 5 years you should have learned how to filter
OT posts, cross posts, topics and users. If not, you can simply skip over
the stuff that does not interest you. But how sad that such a rant comes
from someone who, at least under this user name, has never posted anything
of interest himself.

I suspect that this thread will generate the most uniformity of response
seen in many years in this group. Posters of all types will agree that
moderated groups will not work for us.

Set up a moderated group of your own with John Munch and you can play
fantasy together.
