The hosting Organisation

La Ruelle is a small organization of street workers created in 1991. La
Ruelle works with people and families in a high level of poverty. It works
to support, listen to and create relationships with these people, as a
gesture of solidarity, in order to create an identity and from it, to make
some cultural activities. So together, to participate in the construction of
a different future, individually or collectively and to contribute to the
emancipation of socially disadvantaged people.
The organisation proposes several activities:
1) In the locality: La Ruelle organises activities in the area such as a
street and a pavement library, creative workshops in the street and also
contact sport activities, in different areas of the city (park, school and
streets) for children, teenagers and families.
2) At the office of the organisation: La Ruelle organizes painting workshops
twice per week for isolated children between 2 and 13 years old. Their
families are also included in activities (workshops or going out). An easily
accessible social service is also proposed: judicial, administrative,
educational, mediation support and first legal advice.
3) Research activities: La Ruelle also do a work of historical and
prospective research with scientists, social workers and people living in
poverty. This historical and prospective research is entitled "Enquiry into
the patrimonial memoires of a traveling people ».The aim is to compare the
life conditions of the poor between the past and the present.
4) In the railway station: 4 times per week, 2 workers of the organisation
go to the North Station and metro stations in Bruxelles to meet homeless
people. La Ruelle gives them friendly support, a listening ear and counsel.
The project is also to bring art into the railway station where creative
workshops are organised with them.
5) With all the population of the town : All year long, La Ruelle organizes
cultural events for the local population in order to gather people
regardless of age, culture, resources and philosophy.

The project

La Ruelle has a long history in hosting EVS volunteers, or conscientious
objectors. Javva and La Ruelle believe that these experiences are enriching
for all, volunteers and partner organizations, target groups and local
Community. This project will host two volunteers.
The Objectives and motivations for this project a
First, the volunteers will have the opportunity to discover many new things:
a different country, different culture, and different way of live. This
experience is enriching in the self-building of an adult. The volunteer will
be involved in an associative live and project and will meet a different
population.
Than, for the organisation, it is also important to host an international
volunteer who will bring news ideas and another way of live. It gives
another point of view and raises debates and exchanges of ideas. It helps us
to progress in our projects and in our way of working. The exchange of the
volunteers with the others European volunteers involved of this common
project is also very interesting for us. We will discover others realities
through the others projects in Europe.
For the population we work with, this will hive an international dimension
of the activities we do with them. The people we work with take a lot of
positive aspects when they are in front of another culture. It's also a way
to be more tolerant, and change the look we have on the people living in
poverty.
Last of all, it's really interesting for us to be a part of this centralized
project "United in variety" and we are very happy to contribute to the fight
against discrimination and bring our experience on his point.

Volunteer's taks

Please note that although they will be hosted in the same project, the 2
volunteers will have the opportunity to integrate different activities
The missions of the volunteers are split into two phases:

1. Phase of observation and participation in the activities of La Ruelle:
For the first six months the volunteers will explore and get involved in the
different activities of la Ruelle and take an active role in the following:
- For the indoor and outdoor workshops (45 %): Four times a week the
volunteers will be involved in the preparation, animation and evaluation of
the workshops. If another member of the team prepares the workshop, they
will help with the animation of the session.
- For the street and pavement library (20 %): Two or three times a week the
volunteers will go to the place of the library and set out the books. Then
they will discuss with the children, read to them and help them to read.
For the research (20 %): One day will be reversed to the research. The
volunteers will be able to help with the animation of the seminars or
meeting we make on the topic of the "Enquiry into the patrimonial memories
of a travelling people ». They can also help during the interviews of the
families made for the enquiry.
- For the visit to the station (10 %): The volunteers will go with another
member of the team. They will have meetings and discussions with the
homeless people. They will eventually be able to help with and carry out
projects with them.
- The volunteers will also participate in the organisation of the activities
and events for all the local population (5 %)

During all the activities, the volunteers will have the opportunity to go to
meet with families and schools.

2. Phase of development of a "personal project":
In the second phase, we propose that the volunteers will invest particular
time into one aspect of the association's work (street work, research or
office-based work). If they choose one activity, they will naturally be able
to participate in the work of other areas.
They will be able to develop projects autonomously. They will, however,
always accompany another member of the team (like all employees of the
association). So they will be able to develop a project inside the
association.

Example of a typical week for the volunteer:
The working days are from Tuesday to Saturday. Sundays and Mondays are free.
We may also work on national holidays. Of course, the volunteers will be
entitled to recover the days.

Tuesday: Research work:
- Meeting and discussions with scientists, social workers and people living
in poverty,
- Study of a texts and books on the notion of poverty.
Wednesday:
9h -12h: interior workshop with families (ex: cooking)
13h -17h: railway station in Brussels: meeting of the homeless people
Thursday:
9h - 10h30: Weekly meeting: evaluation of the past week with all the team
members
10h30-12h: Planning meeting: preparation of the workshop for the week
13h-15h: Street library
15h-18h: workshops in the office with children
Friday:
9h - 12h: Collective Preparation of the workshops
13h-14h: Street Library outside the Henry Frick school
14h-16h: Contact Sport in street
Saturday:
9h-12h: moving workshop (ex: photos) in house of poor families of the
locality
Lunch: Community lunch and meeting with parents.
14h-17h: Moving workshop in the Parc "Petit Boul" of Saint-Josse
The volunteer will have 6 weeks of holidays over a 12 months project, like
the rest of the workers.

The local community

Saint-Josse Ten Noode is a district of Brussels, the smallest in the North
East of Brussels with a population of 22 000 inhabitants of more than 100
ethnicity's. More than 30 % of the population lives in this town thanks to
social or charitable support. 40 to 45 % of the population is under 25
years old.
Brussels, the capital of Belgium is a small city, and remains a place where
people feel comfortable to live in. There is a vast cultural and social life
that's going on in the capital. The city is very multicultural with large
groups of Europeans, South Americans and Africans living in. The patchwork
of cultures, nationalities, professions, and religions gives to Brussels a
particular atmosphere.
Due to its central location, Brussels, has become headquarters of two major
international organisations: the European Union (E.U.) and the North
Atlantic Treaty Organisation (N.A.T.O.). This in turn has brought many
international organisations and private companies to establish offices in
the country.

Practical arrangements

Food: The host organisation will arrange for the volunteer to eat at a
canteen or in a host family or will give them money to buy their own food
and ensure they have access to facilities to prepare it.
Accommodation: The volunteers will stay in a room within close proximity to
la Ruelle
Language training: Volunteers will receive language training (formal or
non-formal) throughout their stay, arranged by the host organisation. The
volunteers will be able to take French or Dutch lessons through a social
promotion.

Volunteers with less opportunities / special needs

This project does not particularly focus on the involvement of volunteers
with less privileged background, although it is open to anyone in general.
Unfortunately, the nature of the project does not allow hosting either a
volunteer facing severe disabilities, nor disadvantaged young people in
general.

Unity 2 / CFD: Hosting Organisation : CFD / YAP Germany
Place: Frankfurt - GERMANY
Number of volunteers: 1
Period: 15/04/04 - 15/04/05

The hosting organisation

YAP Germany - CFD organises international workcamps in Germany and sends
German participants to wokcamps all over the world. It is also a sending and
hosting organisation in different long term voluntary service programmes, in
the Short Term EVS and the Mobility55 programme; organisation of different
national and international seminars, study visits, etc. YAP Germany - cfd is
the German branch of Youth Action for Peace International; and a member of
CCIVS, AVSO, EBCO, United, Action Committee Service for Peace.

The project

The overall aim of the project is to get to know the different aspects,
focal points and approaches of intercultural youth work and to combine them
with each other. The volunteer should get a deep insight into the different
levels of intercultural work: women specific anti-racist work with
immigrants; leisure time activities in an international youth centre,
planning and realisation of different international activities for young
adults in the German branch of an international youth organisation. If the
project would have a headline, it would probably be something like: "The
different forms of intercultural work existing in one city". These insights
gained on the local level should be connected and the projects run by the
three associations with their specific focal points should be combined. The
most important objective of the voluntary service is the personal
development of the volunteer and her/his own project at the end of the
voluntary service. It would be more than desirable if the volunteer could
use these experiences after her/his return to her/his country of origin by
continuing organising activities with the support of the sending
organisation.

Volunteer's taks

1) Two days a week s/he will work with an association organising women
specific anti-racist projects :
- The volunteer will help them with the weekly-organised meeting for girls
and young women (immigrants from Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe)
by supporting the preparation and realisation of the meetings and by
contacting the participants.
- S/he will support the staff with the archiving of materials and the
establishment of an overview of new international publications linked to the
topic (depending on the origin of the volunteer these can be new
publications in French, English, Russian or Spanish).
- S/he also has the possibility to assist in any of the regular activities
of the association (depending on his/her interest in them).

2) Once a week the volunteer work in an international youth centre in
Frankfurt.
S/he will assist the team in the organisation and realisation of the
different leisure time activities the centre is offering. The aim is that
the volunteer will bring in and carry out her/his own ideas and proposals
with the support, guidance and care of the staff. Depending on her/his
experiences and interests these could be: Music, arts, sports activities,
film nights, lectures, discussions, parties, etc. What is important is that
the visitors of the centre recognise his/her presence and involvement in a
regularly organised activity and therefore co-operate with him/her in this
joint event.

3) The volunteer will spend the remaining two days per week in the office of
YAP Deutschland - CFD. During these two days the emphasis is set on the
following:
- The step-by-step introduction into international youth work and the work
of YAP-cfd
- into international platforms and networks, their members, activities and
priorities
- into different national and international programmes (by the staff of
YAP-cfd).
From February / March onwards the volunteer will work on the planning and
realisation of his/her own project. This personal project can be:
An international seminar about immigration and intercultural youth work
organised in the summer in Frankfurt; a large event organised in
co-operation with the youth centre and its visitors (an exhibition of
sculptures, drawings or photos; a music evening; a theatre play; a street
festival; a radio play or a contribution to the open TV channel - prepared
by the visitors and the volunteer during their weekly meeting); the
co-leading of an international work camp in Germany in which the volunteer
will initiate discussions about the problems immigrants are facing -focusing
on the young people of the second and third generation, etc.
What his/her personal project will be about is very flexible and open to the
volunteer's interests, skills and the experiences s/he will gather during
her/his voluntary service. In order to realise this project the volunteer
will be supported and guided by the staff of YAP-cfd and the international
youth centre.

The volunteer will work five days a week, six hours a day. If occasionally
the work will be during evenings or weekends (due to specific activities),
the volunteer will take this time off during the week or day. The days spent
in each association proposed in this schedule are not fixed yet (can also be
Monday & Tuesday at yap-cfd, or Thursday and Friday, etc.) depending on the
interest of the volunteer for joining and being involved in specific
activities of the associations.

The local community

Frankfurt am Main is the biggest city in the region of Hessen and the
economically wealthy Rhein-Main region. Frankfurt is located in the mid-west
of Germany, about 250 km South East of Cologne and 450 km North of Munich.
It is surrounded by three beautiful highlands: Spessart, Odenwald and
Taunus. Due to its central position it can easily be reached from different
other cities such as Hanover, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Basel or Stuttgart;
and there are many direct train connections to Frankfurt from major cities
all over Europe. Beside that, Frankfurt has the second biggest airport in
Europe.
The number of permanent inhabitants is approximately 650.000, but during
the day around 1,5 million people are working in the city due to the fact
that many international banks and service companies are located in
Frankfurt. These are for example: The European Central Bank, the Deutsche
Bank headquarters, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the German stock exchange, and
other major international banks.
But Frankfurt is not only a financial place: It has been one of the main
places in Germany where the 68 revolution took place; the headquarters of
the German Trade Union and of attac! are in Frankfurt as well. This
diversity gives the city a specific atmosphere -and has always done.
Historically speaking, Frankfurt has been founded in 794 A.D., all the
German emperors have been crowned in the city and the first democratic
parliament has been established in Frankfurt in 1848.
Frankfurt also has a university with approximately 35.000 students and
which offers many different subjects. It is quite well known for the
"Frankfurter Schule" of which many popular sociologists and philosophers
have been members.
It is also a very multi-cultural city. According to the statistics 30% of
the inhabitants are foreigners coming from 110 different countries.

Practical arrangements

Food: The volunteer will prepare the meals her-/himself and receive money
for food.
Accommodation: The volunteer will live in a single in a shared flat with all
equipment at disposal.
Language training: S/he will attend an intensive language during the first
month (four weeks language course, Monday -Thursday, 09.00 -12:30).
Afterwards s/he will attend a course two evenings the week, 90 minutes each.
Concerning the training and support, please see above.

Volunteers with less opportunities / special needs
This project does not particularly focus on the involvement of volunteers
with less privileged background, although it is open to anyone in general.
Unfortunately, the nature of the project does not allow hosting either a
volunteer facing severe disabilities, nor disadvantaged young people in
general.

Unity 4 / CAR: Centro de Acogida de Refugiados de
Alcobendas
Coordinating Organisation:
Casa de la Juventud
Place: Alcobendas (Madrid) -
SPAIN
Number of volunteers: 1
Period: 15/04/04 - 15/04/05

The hosting organisation

The host organisation is a hosting centre for refugees, located in the same
area as Casa de la Juventud, hosting coordinating organisation.

The Centre in under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs. Its
objectives are to integrate socially political refugees hosted in Spain.

The activities of the centre a
· Animation work with children
· Education support
· Ludotheque
· Personal support to the refugees
· Support to awareness raising and campaign activities.

The project

Generally, the project aims at working with international programmes
providing young people in our local community the opportunity to get in
contact with other cultures, point of view and to open their mentality to
those other "worlds". For the organisation, it is a tool to empower and
enrich the life of young people in our city.

We strongly wish to host a volunteer in the refugee centre because ewe
believe that is a good opportunity for the him/her to discover another
reality, and for the refugees to have an outside and innovative input in
their daily life.

The volunteer will participate to the activities of the centre, with a focus
on the work withy the children inside the hosting centre.

Volunteer's taks

The volunteer will be working together with the staff and local volunteers
in the hosting centre for refugees. S/her will be part of the team, but with
limited responsibilities in some cases.

The tasks will depend very much on the volunteers' expectations and
abilities and it is very difficult to specify at this very moment what exact
tasks the volunteer will be involved in. But they will be mainly linked to
the work with the children. In general the volunteer will have the
possibility to be involved in:
· Support and involvement in organising leisure activities for the
children
· Support to their homework
· Prepare and go out with them in excursions (not alone)
· Involvement in developing awareness raising and campaign
activities
· Space for personal project and initiatives in this filed of action

But autonomy will be given to the volunteer to implement his/her own
projects within the host organisation in general, and not only through
his/her work with the children. But this will be encouraged in the second
phase of the project, as time to get to know the work and the environment
will be needed, especially looking at the particular aspect of the target
group. This will be encouraged mostly after 6 months, and will be realised
within the context of the overall aim of this application.

The volunteer will work 5 days a week and get normal holidays (1 month over
12 months projects), with most of weekend free. If the volunteer has to work
on weekend, s/he will be able to recuperate these days during the following
week.

Unity 5 / ALBATROS: Hosting Organisation : ALBATROS
Coordinating
Organisation: YAP Italia
Place: Rome - ITALY
Number of volunteers: 1
Period: 15/04/04 - 15/04/05

The hosting organisation

Albatros cooperative's aims a studying, researching, giving information,
preventing drug addictions, helping handicapped children, preventing social
and cultural exclusion, developing leisure and educational activities in a
city local framework. Working both in the local centre and in the
neighbourhood streets the cooperative is trying since its constitution to
fight against social exclusion, low literacy rate, violence against under
age persons and the urban decline.

In the local centre the cooperative develops artistic, leisure, computer,
sport and literacy activities with disadvantaged children and young people
between 1 and14. The street activities are aimed to reduce the high level of
drug addiction between the youngest and to improve parents awareness about
drug abuse and about violence against under-aged.

In this framework the association also organizes daily excursions and
special events in order to include families in the daily functioning of the
local centre.

A professional staff, a psychologist, a sociologist and professional
educators are employed to better achieve the aims of the cooperative.

The project

Albatros can host two volunteers, but only one will be hosted in the frame
of the "Unity in Variety. No discrimination" project.

The project's aim will be the same aim of the cooperative that will host the
volunteers. They will organize leisure, artistic, sport, computer and
literacy activities in order to avoid the social and cultural exclusion of
the children, violence against under aged persons and the large illiteracy
phenomena. The project will be organized in two main sections, one for the
children between 1 and 5 and will include sport and game activities in
cooperation with the educators that have been working since years in the
centre. The second will consist in after-school, sport, artistic and
handcraft activities with scholars between 6 and 14. During the year the
volunteers will organize daily excursion and special events in order to
involve the parents in the daily life of the centre.

We believe that the project will be a good possibility to improve the civil,
social and international awareness of the volunteers and a good way to learn
more about how to organize activities with disadvantage under-aged persons
and by the way a good opportunity to improve their curriculum vitae.

Volunteer's tasks

The volunteer will take part in the daily activities of the cooperative.
They will assist the staff in the organisation of the leisure and sport
activities for the children aged 1 to 5 in the morning and sport and
artistic activities of the young scholars of the neighbourhood schools in
the afternoon / after-school

He / she will be organising sportive events like football games, volley
ball, gymnastic activities in the garden of the cooperative to occupy the
free time of the children. They will assist the children between 1 and 5
years during their permanence in the centre, playing free games with them
and organizing collective games.

The volunteer will also take part in the artistic, computer and after-school
activities having as participants illiterate children, such as games to
learn the alphabet, the numbers, how to count and how to write.

Others activities will be realised to teach how to use a computer and how to
realise small handcraft furnishings in order to show to the kids their
abilities. We believe that involving the kids in these activities should
help them improve their cultural situation and occupy their free time in an
useful way.
The volunteer will also organise daily excursions to show them the city as
the children normally do not leave the quarter; special events are planned
by the staff with the aim to include the parents in children's activities in
the framework of the cooperative. The volunteer will be involved through the
organisation of a Christmas party, concerts and theatre representations.
Almost all the activities will be in the local office of the cooperative.

The activity of the volunteer will be supported by the experience and the
professionalism of the staff and we believe this will be a great opportunity
for them to improve their knowledge about how to work with disadvantaged
children and youth. The cooperative will really welcome any kind of
responsible and coherent proposal from the volunteer in order to improve the
cultural and leisure life of the association. The permanent staff organises
the daily functioning of the cooperative, they provide children with
professional assistance and teaching and try to involve the local community
in the daily life of the centre through the organization of special events
in which their sons and daughters are involved. The volunteer will help the
staff in order to give the children a better and intercultural assistance.

As it is the first time the children are going to have international
volunteers in the centre we decided to involve two persons in this project
(but only one volunteer will be involved in the Unity project). The
volunteers will work together and they will need to cooperate in order to
better face the group of children whom they are supposed to work with. They
will organise and implement the activities together so they will be able to
create a more familiar climate and help each other.

15% of their time will be spent organizing the activities; both in between
them and with the staff of the centre while the other 85% will be dedicated
to direct contacts with the children. The weekends will always be free. The
volunteers will have 30 days holidays over 12 months project.

The local community

Both Albatros and YAP Italy are located in the outskirts of Rome, where we
encounter several severe social problems. The group is steadily inserted in
the socio-cultural dynamics of the district, and fight against the moral and
material degradation of the area, with a high percentage of unemployment,
especially amongst the youngest, low education, high figures of drug
addiction and minor delinquency. It also keeps in touch with other
associations in the area. In this context, the group intervenes with its own
activities trying to improve the development of the cultural and social
background, fighting violence against under-aged persons and social
exclusion, working above all with children and very young people at risk or
disadvantaged.
Inside the cooperative there are only Italian staff working and we believe
that the insertion and activities of international young volunteers will be
an added value to the daily life of the centre. The volunteers will bring
their culture, energy and abilities and give the cooperative a new
international image. The consolidated relation with the district, due to the
work on the streets, with the children, youth and disadvantaged families,
has created a climate of cordiality and support to the presence of young
foreign volunteers, that are recognised to be an important and indispensable
resource to the community.

Practical arrangements

Food: The host organisation will arrange for the volunteers to eat at a
canteen or in a host family or will give them money to buy their own food
and make sure they have access to facilities to prepare it.
Accommodation: The host organisation will find adequate accommodation for
the volunteers.
Language training: Volunteers will receive language training (formal or
non-formal) throughout their stay, arranged by the coordinating
organisation.

Volunteers with less opportunities / special needs

Both Albatros and YAP Italy always underline and stress the insertion of
young people with special needs into the projects. The possible applications
will be examined in order to check the compatibility of a person with
special needs with a regular stay in the project, even if changes and
possible adaptations have to be made. This is the reason why it is
impossible to affirm a priori that the project is compatible with all
special needs. For this reason, in collaboration with associations that deal
with differently able people, we are establishing hosting projects in which
we can guarantee the compatibility with any special need.

Unity 6 / BICSKE: Hosting Organisation : Community Room - Bicske
Refugee Centre
Coordinating Organization: Via Pacis
Place: Budapest - HUNGARY
Number of volunteers: 2
Period: 15/04/04 - 15/04/05

The hosting organisation

Menedék Hungarian Association for Migrants was established in January 1995
as a civil initiative. The Association operates as a non-profit
organisation, independent from governmental institutions.

During the regular activities at offices in Budapest and Debrecen, the
social workers deal with the problems of the refugees who come to the
Association for help. The Association continuously organises club and group
sessions for refugees. In addition, there are community programmes organised
regularly and occasionally: summer children camps, cultural and sport
events.
The Center organises and co-ordinates social, informational, mental-health
programmes promoting the social integration of refugees staying in Hungary ;
we organise integration into labour market sessions through job finding
clubs and orientation training, psycho-social counselling and therapy ; we
run trainings for interpreters ; compiling, reproducing and distributing of
information brochures describing the rights of the migrants across the
country are also a regular activity.
We also edit, publish and distribute the monthly newsletter 'Oltalomkeresok'
('In Search for Shelter') with a focus on migration news.

The project

The project will host two volunteers.

The volunteers will be involved in the 'Community Room' project in Bicske
Refugee Centre. In the autumn of 2001 Community Rooms were set up in two
Refugee Reception Centres in Hungary: one in the Debrecen Reception Centre
and another in Bicske. These community rooms enable the refugees to get
access to the services of NGOs in one location as well as accommodate the
programmes of the refugee and migrant groups in the reception centres and
the city. The most important impact of the project is that it supports the
initial steps towards integration and social inclusion of those who are
recognised as refugees already in the reception centres, as well as it
supports their networking even after leaving the reception centres. Through
the various programmes taking place in the Community Rooms, the gap between
the migrant (refugee) groups and the local (host) communities has already
been, in certain aspects, eliminated. The project associates with the
community projects of the association (subproject of our social work
project).

The motivation to host volunteers in the Community Room Network project is
to ensure the operation of the project by utilising the human sources of the
society. In the case of this project it is possible to work with volunteers
as the organisation of community programmes does not require any special
training or experiences, the motivation and the enthusiasm is more
important.

One important tool in the work on the integration of refugees is diffusing
values of foreign cultures, European culture, and this is more authentic if
your organization is multicultural. The negative attitudes of the society
concerning foreigners can be also modified by offering and showing to people
a multicultural environment. We believe that involving foreign volunteers is
a step in the creation of a more human, more tolerant society.

We think that this project could be useful for all three sides. The
volunteers can gain a lot of experiences, learn a new language, study a
different society and culture, meet a special community that can be
frightening for those who do not have personal contacts with its members.
The organization will gain a lot from the voluntary service, not only by
having an additional workforce but by acquiring new input from the
volunteers' experience; and we hope the inhabitants of the refugee camp will
make a benefit from the work of the volunteers who arrive to Hungary just
for this purpose.

with less privileged background, although it is open to anyone in general.
Unfortunately, the nature of the project does not allow hosting either a
volunteer facing severe disabilities, nor disadvantaged young people in
general.

Unity 7 / MINUNATA: Hosting Organisation : Casa Minunata
Coordinating
Organisation: MTP Oradea
Place: Oradea - ROMANIA
Number of volunteers: 1
Period: 15/04/04 - 15/04/05

The hosting organisation

MTP Oradea
The organisation is a non-profit and non-governmental association
established 4 years ago as a local branch of the Romanian branch of Youth
Action for Peace Romania with the headquarters in Cluj-Napoca. The main
activities of the organisation aOrganizing work-camps, organising and
promoting EVS projects, seminars and conferences, Human rights campaigns and
community development.
Casa Minunata
Casa Minunata is a special education institution created for the education
and integration of children who need special support because of their
physical or mental disabilities. About 60 children are being educated this
year, 30 of them belonging to the nursery program and the others to the
elementary one.

The project

Casa Minunata is an NGO and it was built by Speranta Foundation, an
institution which also provides its financial support. Throughout the years
we've hosted several volunteers from different countries and we are always
opened to new ideas and projects. The reason why we would like to host a
volunteer is that we would like to offer him/her the chance to work with
these special cases children and of course the chance to give us a hand and
help our staff with their tasks.

Volunteers' taks

This project concerns a very delicate problem: that of the physically
disabled children. The main work of the volunteer is to assist and
participate actively to the educational process that is carried out in this
institution. The educational process, which is very dynamic and innovative,
allows the volunteer to become a "teacher". It includes all kinds of
activities: singing, playing, reading, writing, communicating, drawing,
painting, etc. S/he will assist the teacher during classes and will
supervise the children, but will be also able to become actively involved,
teaching the children new things, even things belonging to his own culture.
There will also be several opportunities to go along with the kids on
different trips or social visits that are organized by the institution.

As a first task, the volunteer will help the staff with the cleaning of the
classrooms, with the cooking and of course with the maintenance of the
garden and of the pool. This task won't take too much of the volunteer's
activity time (maximum 1 hour a day - 14% of his time).

Example of a typical day for the volunteer:

08.00-the school bus arrives and the volunteer will help the children out of
the bus and inside the building.
08.05-08.30-the children play different games and the volunteer can teach
them new games.
08.30-09.00-it's time for singing, reciting poems, getting to know each
other by telling stories about everyone's families. The volunteer can sing
along with the children, teach them new songs and poems.
09.00-10.00-special activities take place for an hour: the mathematics class
help the children with their numbers, the drawing or painting class will be
their chance to express themselves. The volunteer will have access to these
classes and will be able to help the teachers in any way s/he can. S/he can
also help the administrative staff and prepare the food for the youngsters.
10.00-10.25-kids eat for the first time and the volunteer can assist and
help them with their good manners.
10.25-10.30-it's personal hygiene time as the kids wash their hands and
brush their teeth.
10.30-12.00-the opportunity to play with the computer becomes a dream come
true for the 'little ones'. This is also the time for physical therapy and
logopedics (the volunteer can assist and help the physical therapist)

12.00-12.20-lunch
12.20-12.30-personal hygiene
12.30-13.30-the kids can watch some cartoons and movies, but they can also
listen to some music or sing some songs.
13.30-the children's departure (they go home by bus)
13.30 - 14.30 administrative support.
After 13.30 the volunteer might have to stay maximum one hour and
assist the staff in the institution. S/He will also have the possibility to
talk with the staff about daily problems or to give his / her feedback on
the whole work with the kids.
The second important task would be that of helping the administrative staff
with different works, as:
· Cleaning the classrooms after the children left,
· Water the garden, the flowers and the grass,
· Help the kitchen staff with the cooking, etc.
17.00-18.30 Romanian language course with a language teacher
19.00-19.30 dinner
9.30-on free evening, visiting friends, family, on Fridays going to the
English Club in the centre of Oradea.

It is very obvious that the schedule is a very flexible one so that the
volunteer can choose to join the staff in assisting in those activities s/he
feels s/he can give valuable contribution.
The volunteer will also help the institute during the holidays when the
buildings are renovated, modernized or reconstructed or when the fences are
being painted. But on the whole the administrative work won't be more than
one hour a day during the school year and two hours a day during school
holidays.
During the school holidays the volunteer can travel and discover the
Romanian countryside, cities, the nature and the people.

The local community

Established around 1111, Oradea is a multicultural city where Romanians live
together with Hungarians, Slovaks, Roma, German and Jewish people for
centuries. Oradea has over 250.000 inhabitants and is situated at 15 km from
the Hungarian borderline. There is a big river (Crisul Repede) cutting the
city in two parts and its banks are full with vegetation. It is a university
city and a centre of charming turn of the century architecture (Art
Nouveau). It also has a developed economy (services, tourism, industry).
At only 7 km from Oradea there are two famous thermal water spas. For some
pictures about the city, please click on www.madeintransylvania.rdsor.ro.
The city is facing nowadays typical problems of a post communist transition
society: unemployment, inflation, lack of social and community involvement.

Practical arrangements

Food: The host organisation will arrange for the volunteer to eat at a
canteen or in a host family or will give them money to buy their own food
and ensure they have access to facilities to prepare it. Lunch will be
provided at Casa Minunata, the volunteer will eat together with the children
and staff.
Accommodation: The volunteer will live in a rented apartment together with
other foreign volunteers hosted /coordinated by MTP.
Language training: The volunteer will benefit of weekly language training
in Romanian or Hungarian (up to 40% of the local population of Oradea is
represented by the Hungarian minority). The on-arrival training will consist
also of intensive language training. Language books and notebooks designed
for the Peace Corps volunteers will be used as well as a special manual
developed by one of the coordinators with language basics.

Volunteers with less opportunities / special needs

The organisers will do their best in order to help the volunteer. During the
winter months vegetarians might face some problems in finding fresh
vegetables but once spring is there the local markets abound in fresh
organic food.

During these visits the volunteer will always be accompanied by a
professional social worker from the Bach Foundation.
There will be also several opportunities to go along with disabled kids on
different trips or social visits that are organised by the institution.
