Stopover SFO/LAX - one night
I looked at hotels in downtown San Francisco and a number of them are
already full. The remainder are often over $200. Orbitz offers an amazing $48 rate ($58 with tax and fee) at the Mosser Hotel on 4th St and Mission for 9/24. I think it's because Americans hate rooms with shared baths. They have a bunch of other downtown hotels for under $100 that night. I agree with you that S.F. is a more interesting place to stop than L.A., and with the new BART extension to the airport, it's very quick to get in and out of town.
