Default ? about cruise room service

We are leaving Friday for our first cruise. I have learned a lot reading
this group and I'm grateful for the quality of information posted. One
thing crossed my mind, though, that I haven't seen mentioned. When room
service meals are ordered, is tipping required per order (as it would be in
a hotel)? We will be on Oceania's Insignia which assesses a gratuity which
is pooled. Dining is open seating so patrons don't necessarily have the
same servers.
Thanks,
Paul Johnson

We've always handed a couple dollars to the steward when he delivered the
food. The staff from room service can vary and aren't among those you
rountinely tip at the end of your cruise (waiter, assistant waiter and cabin
attendant), so a per-delivery tip seemed to be in order.

I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, I usually slip 'em a 10 spot if they're
cheerful and efficient, which they usually are. As much as people complain
about tipping, these people truly _earn_ their tips.

A couple of bucks really makes the delivery person happy. You watch them
when you give them the tip. They certainly earn the money. Especially if
they have to carry the tray up from the kitchen as they do on HAL ships.

Yup...tip room service waiters. I base the amount on what I'm having
delivered. For a pot of coffee, $1-2 is probably okay. If I'm getting
a full meal I'll tip $5. If it's your cabin steward that's delivering
the food, I don't think you "need" to tip additionally, but it
wouldn't hurt. Usually, the folks that deliver room service are not
service personnel that serve you specifically elsewhere like in the
dining room.

We've always tipped 2 bucks for each delivery, whether it be the morning
coffee, or my late night sandwich. The Stewards are thrilled with this
amount. ...Although I've never had a full meal delivered to the room, I
too would lean towards the 5 buck tip for such a service. ...Jon
