Exactly. Even Miss Manners, a US etiquette guru, insists that switching
is correct.

so how does your husband square Miss Manners with your, er, teaching?

As I said, he's an intelligent man!

diplomacy is a substitute in the absence of overwhelming force

The other way, I would have thought - use force only when/if diplomacy
fails.

??????
Most of the people in the UK are right-handed. Few, if any, of them
switch hands.

I dont think any do in Europe or anywhere else? The interesting point
is that (Ok I believe it exists) some Americans clearly believe that
switching is classier while the European countries they came from all
believe the opposite. Which is funny. How did that change take place?
Nobody bought the idea of couldn't afford the implements, but it
obviously happened.
Of course the European way *is* classier because it requires more
training initially to achieve a more natural fluid eating style making
use of both hands. But I would think that, wouldn't I? :-)

Being an immigrant, I learned the US way of eating and
invariably eat switching hands. My wife maintained that *not*
switching hands was uncouth. Surprisingly, I feel the European
two-handed method is a little faster and more efficient. It's
interesting that Dickens blamed German (!) immigrants for
introducing what I think he called the "shovelling" method to
the US. My kids easily learned the two-handed method and used to
enjoy using it on while on trips to Europe.

OK, lets try something else:-

"Is that a knife and fork in your pocket or are you pleased to see
me?"

or was it the Thatcher style handbagging?

We are still on the Shetland habit! Once we actually *see* an
