Evil Aussies Continue Endless Torture of 52,000 Sheep! Aussie Death Ships. Evil Australia
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/...917416347.html
Ten weeks after leaving Fremantle, the 52,000 surviving sheep aboard the MV Cormo Express are scheduled to begin their return voyage today - as unwanted in Australia as they were in the Middle East. Coalition MPs yesterday spent most of the their party meeting agonising over the beasts' fate, with a clear majority fiercely opposing their return to mainland Australia on quarantine grounds. The Government has argued slaughtering the sheep at sea - a course demanded by some veterinarians and animal rights activists - would be unsafe, take weeks to complete and contravene international conventions. The sheep are to be shipped to the Cocos Islands, where further tests monitored by international veterinarians will determine whether they could be accepted back in Australia without risk of spreading foreign pests or disease. A spokesman for the Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, said the Cormo Express was scheduled to leave Kuwait at 10 am Australian time - if no country in the region took up Australia's offer to have the sheep for nothing. Although 5350 of the sheep had perished , the remainder were in a reasonable condition and could still be slaughtered for consumption if returned to Australia. The sheep were originally claimed by a Saudi Arabian importer to be infected with scabby mouth disease. The Australian Government maintains that an internationally accredited veterinary team has recently found no evidence of the disease and that the fact that the sheep had been twice vaccinated against scabby mouth made it improbable. Nevertheless, industry groups and MPs yesterday strenuously argued against re-admitting the animals to Australia. The Australian Meat Industry Council issued a warning that unloading the sheep on mainland Australia "risked the future of the $11 billion Australian processed meats industry . . ." Market access and international confidence in Australian meat had been built on its enviable quarantine status. "The return of these sheep . .. . after some two months at sea, would risk shattering this confidence in Australia's largest food export industry," the council said. And a Victorian rural Liberal, David Hawker, strongly opposed the sheeps' repatriation." "Bringing the sheep back to Australia after potential exposure to exotic diseases, or insects not found in Australia, could turn a very difficult situation into a national disaster." Hopefully they will bring the bubonic plague back to Oz. |

I'll take one!
Anyone got any ideas how to teach a sheep to do my office work, or at least knows how to do a good barbecue sauce? |
