I didn't say I was for that law. former home. The proposed french law is essentially an attempt at finding some legal loophole that would allow the french government to find a way to force immigrants from middle east to adapt to French culture and customs. Among other factors that is the biggest one. In one word, integration. Integration? In France? Now that's a real laugh. There whole system is based on everyone there following their concept of what a Frenchman is. They're hypocritical about everything else, but not this. Just follow the nuts trying to purify the French language. |

It's a very long period then, because Germany has been in the doldrums for several years (though not as long as Japan). European growth overall has been much lower than in the US over more than the last decade. Ours last 1 to 2 years at the most. Hardly comparable. So basically you've re-written your argument. Fair enough. You are in fact right in the idea that the US has been growing a lot more than Europe, since the early 90's. That has been the reason for a lot of discussion in all the European countries about what should be our growth and society model. Fact is, the USA is beating Europe both in economic power/growth and in social problems. Europe wants the first one without endangering the latter. Longer working hours means worse quality of life. That's something taken very seriously over here. Your lack of productivity and a low work ethic are, among other reasons, why European countries can't begin to pay for their pensions, which are being cut all over the place. You call that a better quality of life? Then tell me why all those French and Italians are demonstrating against the cuts then? You think there is a free lunch? There is no such thing as a free lunch. That is EXACTLY why longer working hours mean worse quality of life. What you miss here once again is that "Europe" is a group of many different countries. There are several with a bigger hourly productivity than the US and others that don't reach it. http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/P...&mode=download Learn a bit more before saying that working less hours is the reason why European countries in general will have in the future difficulties to pay for the pensions (which are in fact not bad at all!). Learn about the quality of the pensions in most of the European countries (not all), the aging population, and then you'll start to know the reasons behind it. Give us all the ones that have averaged less than the US rate over the last decade. That wasn't the question. Are you changing the questions to meet your objectives? then go read about what is going on right now in France. I don't have to read to know about it, my almost-wife is French and I have access to the French news and reality other than by just reading. This edict is very clear: get rid of your scarf or stay out of school. Period. Long decade-long discussion that is not close to an end. This is a classic case of the French treating unequal cases equally then trying to pontificate about equality. Wow, a "Classic"? I wonder what a Classic is! This case has been all over the news and was started about two young girls trying to wear their scarves. Actually there are more than 2 girls envolved. Anyway I'm not going to argue regarding this subject as I don't agree with prohibiting such kind of things in public schools. But I will never say that this is because the French are not democratic whatsoever. As for instance I don't agree with prohibiting people to smoke in public spaces even though I hate the smoke. |

To blame someone else's inborn envy of the U.S. and America-hatred on President Bush is laughable. Sorry things look so bad for your candidate. KM Sorry, but your adolescent chest-thumping is unconvincing. I suppose if you objected to my hitting you with a baseball bat, I should claim that you just don't like me because I'm from Detroit. Grow up and get some brains. |

That's great news for others ! I'm buying $$ right now in case it goes up again (it will one day...AFTER bush) Might take a while to undo the damage SHRUB and the GOP has done. Look at what happened in California. The Jarvis people banned increases in property taxes with Prop 13. Because of Prop 13, local governments became reliant on income taxes and sales taxes. This has apparently made the state and county exceedingly susceptible to swings in the stock market because many people in the S.F. Bay Area area are "wealthy" because of stock options, not because of cold hard cash. Normally, this would not be a problem...except that Californians like social services, good living conditions, e.g. unpolluted waters, access to wilderness, etc. AND are unwilling to pay for these goodies. So...because of the legacy of Pete Wilson and numerous Republican governors, there was a plan to de-regulate electricity. Then, Enron and the energy companies decided they want to make a fast buck. And so California had rolling blackouts...everyone's screaming we want stable energy supply. So Gray Davis and the Democrats did the best they could...Gray Davis managed to get re-elected. A month after he got re-elected, a bunch of Republicans got together and said we can take him down. Let's get someone else instead. Sooo...Darrell Issa pulled out his checkbook and hired a bunch of people who got paid according to the number of signatures they got for the recall. Arnie, deciding how nice it would be if he could do a Ronald Reagan, got into the race...avoided talking about issues and became GOVERNOR. The moral of the story is: you don't have to know anything; just avoid talking about issues--lie if you have to...give a good show...show people how nice you are and make them want to be your friend and you'll be elected to public office. The Americans who voted for SHRUB and the rest of the GOP crew deserve everything that's been happening. As for those of us who didn't vote for them, there will be tomorrow and tomorrow is another day. Lil |

... wrote: And sure we should have listened to them. Then Saddam would still be in power rather than prison, killing 100,000 or so a year. While it is quite evident that Hussein had performed terrible acts in the past, it was not evident that those acts were continuing. Look at Bliar's new darling: Khadafi. He also has performed terrible acts in the past, but just because he decided to announce he wouldn't be a terrorist anymore, the world would be ready to conveniently forget his past crimes ? Interesting that Hussein had complied with UN mandated destruction of WMD, but the USA still wanted to invade, while Lybia was still working on them and nobody was talking about invading Lybia. There is no getting around it, Khadafi has mellowed with age, though he was never guilty of the atrocities of Saddam Hussein. To compare Hussein with Khadafi is just plain laughable. The reason Iraq was invaded and there is no talk of invading Libya is simply because Iraq was guilty of breaking United Nations enforceable resolutions; Libya is not. Iraq was not in compliance with the Safwan Accords which called for invasion in the event of non-compliance; Libya has signed no such document. Petty simple, huh? KM |

I read newspapers and magazines from many countries (including the US) regularly, I watch TV from many countries (including the USA) regularly, but no, Mr. Vitaly insists that if I don't watch AND believe FOX news that I am brainwashed. So funny. Secondly, the old jealousy argument again. How arrogant can you be, Vitaly? I have repeatedly stated that I have more freedoms here than I could ever have in the USA. Heck, I wouldn't even be allowed to live with my partner of more than 9 years in the US. Open your eyes, Vitaly, and see that there is a huge world outside the USA. The US is *not* "the best country in the world", as you have been indoctrinated to believe. Sjoerd |
