"You can harass *those* people, you know, the riff-raff, the ones I don't like.... What? Wait! Where are you taking me!!!!!" In the words of Martin Niemoeller: First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me. |

Us nonriff-raff have American citizenship. By the way, according to the cited article, that is what the US attorney told the judge; no decision by the judge is available yet, so the wailing and gnashing of teeth may be a bit premature. Speaking as a US citizen, we can assume that is the official position of our Gov't. That scares me. Speaking as a non-US citizen (yes I hold dual citizenship) I can assume that is the official position of your Gov'. That scares me. What really scares me is that many Americans seem to support this sort of absolute disdain for human rights, as long as it is done to [some other group/person]. I would hope that we have come far from the days of savagery and ingorance, but the Bush administration is hell-bent on proving me wrong. |

TNSAF wrote: Comforting to know! Flyers passing through U.S. have few rights, Arar judge told Last Updated Thu, 11 Aug 2005 11:10:12 EDT That wasn't the most scary quote in that article, I thought. How about: "However, (US Dept. of Justice) spokeswoman Cynthia Magnuson issued this short statement: "The United States does not practise torture, export torture or condone torture." In legal briefs written by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the Justice Department has defined torture to mean "pain consistent with major organ failure or death." , it's right at the bottom of: http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/nation...uit050811.html The implication of course being, that the US is doing torture, that isn't defined as "pain consistent with major organ failure or death". I'm surprised the media isn't picking up on that one more. Nick |

In this particular case the idiot transited through US territory (JFK, and no US airport that I know of has sterile international - to - international transit facilities). If he'd transited ex - US he could have avoided all this... -- Bet Greg |
