Yesterday evening, the flight Stuttgart-Dusseldorf cancelled. Advance
warning? None. Compensation? You get your money back. Hotel? Nothing.
You want to go, you can catch a train, or wait for the plane the next
day- if it flies. The girl on the checkin says it happens to over half
the scheduled flights on that route, not enough passengers.
So much for full-fare flag carrying airlines. Anyone have any statistics?

That's interesting. Then Lufthansa is competing with itself because
Germanwings owned by Eurowings owned by Lufthansa also flies this route
twice daily, probably at a much lower price even after all taxes and
fees are added to initial low prices.

Well, the issue ist not the cancelling of flights because those things
really don't happen very often in Europe. The issue is the total lack
of proper customer service in Europe that makes these things quite
annoying. They don't even try to help you.

They should have offered compensation and assistance at least according
to
http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/lex/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32004R0261:EN:HTML.
Seems strange to me, Lufthansa didn't offer that.

I thought the EU had rules about this?

We were told that the rules don't apply to domestic flights.

To quote that piece:

2. When passengers are informed of the cancellation, an explanation
shall be given concerning possible alternative transport.

Yes, we were told to take the train.

which between Stuttgart and Dusseldorf is actually a pretty good
choice.

The flights might get cancelled more often, because everybody just hops
on the ICE train that takes you from Stuttgart to Dusseldorf in the
same time, taking into account check-in, luggage, transfer to city
centre etc.

Yes, although their schedule is not as good as LH if you need to get in
a working day. My original question was, how often does LH cancel
flights in this fashion? If half the flights get cancelled, like the
girl said, then there is no point in booking LH in the first place.
For that kind of ticket price I think I'm entitled to a reliable service.

This is what Deutsche Bahn gives me, assuming I have to get from
Stuttgart Airport back to Dusseldorf airport to get my car out of the
parking lot:

Stuttgart Flughafen 28.02.06 dep 19:08 2 S 2 S-Bahn Direction:
Schorndorf
Stuttgart Hbf (tief) 28.02.06 arr 19:35 102
Stuttgart Hbf (tief) 28.02.06 walk 9 min.
Stuttgart Hbf 28.02.06
Stuttgart Hbf 28.02.06 dep 19:51 9 ICE 512 InterCityExpress
BordBistro
Düsseldorf Hbf 28.02.06 arr 22:33 18
Düsseldorf Hbf 28.02.06 dep 22:45 7 RE 10339 RegionalExpress
Number of bicycles conveyed limited
Düsseldorf Flughafen 28.02.06 arr 22:51 5

In other words 3 hours longer.
