Mazatlan in May questions
Hi -
We will be in Mazatlan for about 10 days in May, and had a couple of questions about things to do: - We like to snorkel - any recommended places to go for that? - Is it worth renting a car to drive the countryside? Are there interesting things to see within a couple hour drive? Is it safe for an American family to drive in the boonies? - Anybody know if tours of Pacifico brewery are easy to schedule? Or will I have to contact them before we go down there? Thanks for the help! Brian |

Yes, there are many interesting sights in the region. The highway from Mazatlan to Durango is one of the most scenic drives in North America. A section of it is know as the Devil's Spine because it winds along mountain ridges like driving along a giant spine. In places there are sharp drop-offs on both sides of the highway. Careful driving in necessary because, as the road signs up there warn, other drivers will cut the corners regardless of on coming traffic--including and especially trucks. If you enjoy bird watching the lagoons south of Mazatlan offer many opportunities to see tropical birds that Americans generally only see in zoos. The island city of Mexcaltitan stretches your drive time a bit, but is unique and interesting with lots of tropical birds in the surrounding lagoon. Is it safe for an American family to drive in the boonies? Yes, it's _relatively_ safe, or to put it another way it's not significantly more dangerous than driving in the boonies in the States. You do need to be aware of differences in local driving customs. Here's a link to a reasonably accurate summary: http://www.rversonline.org/ArtMexDrive.html There are places in Mexico where caution is needed, such as very rural Chiapas or Mexico's southern border, but my experience has been that the rural areas around Mazatlan are very laid back and pleasant. Mazatlan has a nice traditional mercado. I'd suggest that you give the smoked marlin a try. There's also a nice little archaeological museum within a short walk of the mercado. TB |
