German Airport to use biometric security checks
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Frankfurt airport and Lufthansa airline
employees will be able to pass security checks by scanning their
biometric data, such as fingerprints and iris patterns, under a pilot
project announced Friday.

The German government's Office for Security in Computer Technology is
to launch the six-month project March 15, and some 1,000 employees of
airport operator Fraport and Lufthansa will be eligible to participate
on a voluntary basis.

The government agency hopes the project will help establish which
biometric data are easiest to use and could be phased into
identification documents.

Volunteers will be able to choose whether their fingerprints, iris or
facial measurements will be used to identify them as they report for
work at the airport, continental Europe's busiest.

This pilot project follows last month's inauguration of an initial
biometrics project at the airport - a six-month trial of an automated
passport control system that uses iris-recognition technology. About
2,000 travelers have signed up to use that system, Fraport said.
