Dubai Announces World's Largest Airport

AJC wrote: The sheikhs, on the other hand, are imagining that they can spend their way into modernity. It's a cargo cult. Manhattan is full of skyscrapers, therefore, if we build a bunch of skyscrapers in the middle of the desert, we'll be just like Manhattan. Instead of investing their oil windfall (which, in Dubai's case, is not going to last for more than 10-15 years given the rate at which they are pumping the stuff out) and developing strong native industries, they waste it on shiny baubles like ridiculous French airplanes, artificial islands, shopping malls, and similar rot. Singapore did not get to where it is now by catering to euro-trash tourists, and Dubai won't, either. LOL. You have no idea have you? Dubai is investing. Investing heavily for the future. Dubai Ports is buying up P & O one of the great names in British shipping. Thanks for making my point so eloquently. While Singapore invested in building a variety of native industries, Dubai bought a 19th-century *British* firm. I find it amusing that you refer to it as a ``name.'' You don't have much faith in their business, do you?. You are going to have to get used to it though. Oh, I am already used to sheikhs wasting their windfalls on toys instead of developing a productive native industry. This is nothing new. |
